My company is changing to unlimited vacation days. Will they pay out the people who still have vacations saved up? They are being super secretive. Has anyone gone through this?

Yeah they’re not gonna pay you out most likely. My agency didn’t when we switched and I haven’t heard of any place that has. It’s a money saving tactic, it’s not a benefit to you. They’re not required to pay because they’re not taking away any days you’ve accrued, you can still take them. 🙄

likehelpful

The law probably varies by state. I think in California, for example, they’d have to pay you out. But I’m 100% lawyers have thought through every detail of how to save agencies money on this, so who knows what fuckery they have concocted to get around regulations.

like

They will probably not pay out those days. This happened to me and they phrased it in a VERY misleading way so pay attention to the fine print and just take ur days if ur unsure. I lost about 5 days when I switched agencies and there was nothing I could do

like

So how does that work when you get laid of... can you pick 30 random days you were gonna maybe take, and wanna get paid for???🙊

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the HR conferences where they come up with ways to save money. I'm sure they have adsurb stats that show they save MILLIONS as there will be bell curve types that will actually use them, but the rest are suckers who never get to take them... and now with all the industry layoffs, they don't have to pay out a nickel.

likesmart

This means that if you get laid off they don’t have to payout any unused paid vacation

like

If you are thinking of leaving, you can (in theory) refuse to accept the policy change and leave the day before the policy goes into effect - thereby triggering a legal obligation to pay out. Enough folks doing this (or even threatening to do it) may make them reconsider the approach (but probably not). Unlimited PTO is only a benefit when it is paired with a minimum usage requirement.

like

They will 💯 not pay you out. If it’s part of your comp package you better find an alt benny

like

Most companies that do this won’t pay you out and will discourage you from taking days. Studies have shown that people with this “benefit” take a LOT less vacation than those with set days. It also reduces the financial burden for the company as they aren’t liable for paying you out. I’d be worried and looking to jump ship.

like

If you accrued PTO days, they’re required to pay you out (or have you use them up before the unlimited days go into effect).

like

I was in CA when they did this and they paid people out for their accrued time up to that point in the year. They did it in Q1, which makes sense because most people won't have much accrued unless they let a lot roll over from the previous year.

like

It's a trap!

likefunny

What a pile of crap that is. It sounds amazing at first. Then you realize you will never have the time to take even two weeks off and you don't get to accrue vacation time, which can be a life saver if you get laid off. Saying unlimited vacation time is like saying "work whatever hours you want." It's bollocks. Anyone strolling in at noon and leaving at four isn't going to be around for long.

like

As stated by many, more than likely you won’t get paid post switch so use them up pre-switch!!!

like

Our agency paid everyone out for vacation they had accrued, then made vacation “unlimited PTO”. It’s a total scam. Now they never have to pay you for accrued vacation again, and they are betting that you won’t take as much vacation time as you’re entitled to. Complete horseshit

like

No, Boston! That’s a good point about differing laws per state

like

Have gone through it, yes. Saved up days were not paid out. What came across as a “benefit” was a plan for layoffs that occurred about 3 months later

like

We switched to unlimited vacation this year, at the end of 2017. No payout for accrued days. So far it’s exactly what I predicted: a small number of people are massively abusing the system (think 6-7 weeks off already before July was over) and everyone else is stuck covering for them. It’s a fucking bullshit system.

like

Vacation is technically part of your compensation and any accrued days are earned with your hard work. If you can find the contract you signed when you were hired, see if it mentions vacation compensation. If it does, take it to a lawyer to review. I’ll bet you get paid out

like

Companies do this so they don’t have to hold onto employees’ vacation money. That $$$ could go into bonuses for execs, who deserve more money for coming up with ideas like these! Circle of life

My school has seen combinations of f2f, hybrid, and remote teaching/learning throughout the first half of the school year. After the MLK holiday, our district is returning to traditional f2f teaching 100%. I have 4 band classes (1 beginning, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced), and as far as content pacing is concerned, we’re 1 9-week grading period behind. Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?

Hello Infoscians/Ex-Infoscians!

I will be joining Infosys this Thursday as a 7+ YOE Tech Lead. I am an avid trekker and every year I go on a trek at least once which requires me to take a 5-7 working days off. Its actually my passion.

Just wanted to know how difficult it is to get leaves approved and officially before how many days do i need to inform my manager?

Is there any SOP for applying leaves at Infy?

Thank you in advance!
