My company pays below market. I requested a raise for my direct report, and my boss increased the amount of that raise so that my direct report now earns more base salary than I do. Do you have any thoughts on how to best handle this situation?

Point out the discrepancy and ask your boss to advocate for your salary to match market. You can also hint that you've received interest for your services elsewhere due to your skill and need for folks in your position.

AC1, can be framed as, I really want to stay here but it’s hard to justify (e.g., to my family) if I’m making less than I can at comparable alternatives and less than my direct report.

When is your normal raise/review period?

Personally, I’d wait until then, but then just address it head on and matter of factly. Do a little research before your review.

“I’d like to discuss a raise. Given my experience, senior position and greater responsibilities, I think a raise would be appropriate. I think a salary of $x would be appropriate based on the fact that [subordinate] makes y, and given that other DGCs at similar companies make z.”

If you get push back, use the fact that you’ve been a good team player and were willing to wait for the normal process to play out before asking, but that you expect the company to also do the right thing.

Sounds like your boss is tone deaf. That should not happen or your HR should have caught it. To me, it’s fair to ask your boss. To me it’s less about justifying at this point and more about compensation being upside down.

I agree it should be handled delicately. Maybe suggest doing a comp review at the next raise time to make sure everyone is paid based on their levels. You should advocate for yourself the same way you would for the direct report - just evaluate best timing.

Very helpful, everyone! I really appreciate your advice and insight!

Would jumping to in-house for a ~40% raise, worth it? It’s a software company that seems a bit dated and boring tbh so I’m worried I’d burn myself out but the pay is attractive. Would it be a bad move to leverage the offer to try to get my current agency to even meet me halfway? We’re doing okay financially now and I’ve been there for a year. I like the work and the people but it’s very disorganized which is beyond frustrating. In-house seems more structured but likely less creative.

I've been working different positions here for 20 years. My boss has been fantastic, but tentative plans that we had made for my career stalled when his boss was poached last year. Now I'm frustrated and underpaid, but with no plan for how to resolve it.

I've reassured him that I would keep him in the loop should I be looking to leave. Well, I've got one final interview left with another company and they are offering me >50% more than my current salary.

Current position is $45k year, full time but only a 30hr week. Also, no responsibility and little to no actual work. I play Switch or read most of the time. Was bored and picked up a side project, which impressed the boss. I have a meeting on Thursday with the president of the company for a Social Media/Marketing dual role position. I *know* they’re going to lowball me at $50k. How can I turn it down with tact OR convince them that I’ll need $70k+ to be worth the stress and hassle?

Asked about Alan David vs Michael Andrews vs Enzo Custom a while back. Went to consultations and ordered one full suite and one casual separate pairs.
Alan David: traditional, no BS, very professional 10/10
Michael Andrews: slightly less value for money, same fabrics, outsourced bespoke, light BS due to flashy showroom 8/10
Enzo Custom: stylish and fashion-forward, good value, in-between M2M and bespoke, flashy in a good way 9/10
(Subjective and based on personal experience.)

Well-traveled people: what seem like the best major market cities to live in with access to great in-house jobs (FAANG, adjacent companies, etc.). Some markets seem like really fun places to live but seem insanely expensive (San Fran, DC). Others seem like great comp to cost of living ratios but you seem like you’d basically be in a boring suburb (Raleigh, etc.) or have major drawbacks (arctic weather in Chicago, etc.). Maybe I’m totally off base though. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
