My coworkers and I want to report someone to HR but they are best friends with the one HR person that handles stuff like that... (Other HR person is strictly payroll/holidays/benefits)

Don’t bother. Never trust HR—whatever you say will be used against you. All they are invested in is protecting the C suite and executives. Ask yourself if it is worth potentially losing your job over. And if it is that serious, start looking versus reporting it

Don’t go to HR, despite their positing themselves as such, they are not a social justice department. They report into the CFO and are driven by excel sheets and numbers. They exist to protect the company, not you.

If you don’t do it then that person will just continue their behavior. Try not to worry about the friendship and do the right thing.

What do you want to report about them?

like

What Global Lead said. HR are basically like cops. They say they are there to ‘serve and protect’ you but the main focus of their job is enforcing laws for the state (C-suite). I learned this the hard way myself.

smart

From my personal experience even when HR says things are “confidential” they get out... HR is a joke I don’t know how they sleep at night.

If it is something major (sexual harassment, etc) and you want to make sure the offender doesn’t hurt anyone else you should absolutely report it. If you are concerned about the issue being ignored and are worried that you are going to be punished for being a whistleblower, consider these options: - if you are at a holding company agency, most of them have some sort of holding company-level hotline that you can try - You could set up a meeting with HR, someone from the c-suite and someone else you trust all in the same room. That way you the issue will be harder for management to ignore, and you have at least one trusted witness in the room in case there is any blowback. If you are really, really worried, bring a lawyer with you. - If possible, find out if there are others that have experienced the same issue; get a group together and put your issues in writing. Tell the company that unless they do something about it you will be going to the press with it Again - this is all assuming we are talking about someone committing very serious offenses. If you are upset about not getting a raise or wanting a better desk or something I wouldn’t take it as far as all this. :) If you report a serious offense, you will know almost immediately whether you are being taken seriously by the way HR and management reacts. Trust your gut - if you have a bad feeling about it, get out - that means there is a systematic issue and you aren’t going to be able to change it. Good luck and don’t let the bad guys win; they count on your fear, HR’s cowardice and management’s indifference to protect them.

Maybe before going to HR, try taking that person out for coffee and letting them know your concerns? I don’t know the severity of what you want to report on... but I find that tackling the problem head on is a lot more constructive. That is of course if the goal is to try and resolve the problem. If the person is doing something unethical, then yes report them!

I think in this day and age you have an obligation to report someone no matter the politics. If you don’t you’re saying their behavior is OK and helping them continue it.
