My director sent an email to me on Monday 10am asking me to help her work on a return that needs to be delivered to the client during this weekend. It was a extremely simple return and I thought I could just work on it Tuesday. This morning at 630 am she emailed again saying she didn’t hear back from me on Monday and wanted to see if I have time for it or not. Do I need to reply an email within 24 hours during non busy season? I already feel unmotivated and this is just making me feel worse.

People are sounding kinda harsh on this thread lol. But I suggest you “flip the lens” and see it from her perspective. She probably sent you another email instead of just pinging you, since you weren’t yet online. I’d just ping her back and let her know you’re on it! If you’re new - and I say this with all love - don’t let yourself get in your head on these small things. When I was still new, until I became a sr, I would let these kinda things eat away at me. Don’t give into that feeling. It’s not worth it!

If this is an anxiety thing that happens when you first get an email asking more from you, I suggest counting back from 5 then responding immediately. Your brain probably associates a quick easy task with something negative that happened during busy season. I used to cringe at every email I got during busy season and it made me angry after the fact as well. 5-4-3-2-1… do it without thinking and it will be painless.. retrain that negative thought that pops into your head

Well I would at least let her know you are working on it and tell her the expectations. From her standpoint she needs someone to do it so if you can’t then she needs to find someone who can help

likesmart

Does it take you long to write "yes, I can work on it." ? There is a tight turnaround, so if you're not available, need to locate someone else asap

likesmart

Did you respond to acknowledge that that you could work on it this week? You should do that so that she isn’t left hanging and wondering if you were going to do it or not.

like

Busy season or not, you should respond especially if it’s a tight timeline. People are tryna plan the work and no one’s a mind reader 🤷‍♀️

like

Yes. Just reply that you can help. You obviously saw their message, take the 15 seconds and reapy

like

Agreed It probably took longer to write this post than to answer a simple yes or no

A tax director emailed you asking for help with a tax return Let me repeat that “a tax director” DIRECTOR On a “extremely simple tax return” per you Yes! email that tax director back before cob work on it - it was a simple tax return

like

Gen Z is perfectly capable of responding to emails.

like

Yes you need to respond either way. If you can’t do it then your director needs time to find someone else. Nothing worse than silence!

like

Yes- it’s rude to not at least acknowledge an email, especially when there is a request. You don’t need to actually do the work, but just a quick note to say you’re on it will go far

like

Why didn’t you send her a reply on Monday that said ‘yes, I can work on this on Tuesday’?

like

You should respond if it’s your work hour at least to acknowledge and confirm if you have availability or not. Not being in busy season doesn’t mean you don’t work. Work includes monitoring and actively responding to emails and chats during normal work hours

like

I aim for within 24 hours year round. I agree you should have replied so she would know whether she needed to find someone else to do the work.

like

How much motivation do you need to reply to an email and say that you can or cannot work on it? 24 hours to reply is not unreasonable anytime of the year, but given the tight turnaround needed you probably should have replied that day.

like

She needs delivery this weekend, if she doesn’t have a preparer assigned by Tuesday morning she’s not leaving herself a ton of time to plan. I probably would have followed up in the nicest way possible but it’s not wrong on her part. Also, not wrong on you to not reply within 24 hours.

like

I reply to all emails within about 4 business hours either with an answer/output or letting them know I’m working on it and when they can expect the answer/output from me.

like

Yeah see this can’t be the expectation lol

A simple yes would suffice.

like

Do you need a raise? If not, then reply after 24 hours. If you need a minimum raise, reply within 24 hours. If you want a great raise, reply within 1 hour, always.

funny

Why would you not reply to an email? Is common courtesy dead?

funny

Are you at PwC?

Agreed Plus it was a tax director you know 2 levels from a partner If a director emails me, calls me, pings me via teams, I respond ASAP or shortly
