My district is experiencing a teacher shortage (shocking). Prep teachers, academic coaches, and teachers on special assignment are being put back into the classroom. Any other districts doing the same?

I think that this a great idea. Hopefully temporary though. Those positions could probably benefit from a refresher on what it’s like to be the classroom. They help teachers and students on a daily basis but may have forgotten the reality they go through. I wish our district would do this when we are short subs or when we have teachers out for extended time. We have a new English curriculum and instruction coach who simply does not get it. The chosen texts and activities are not engaging for students or teachers. A few days back could really help them to realize what works and what doesn’t in today’s classrooms.

Our department has been a revolving door for many years. Getting a sub should be as easy as filling out the online form but many days our subs are pulled to go elsewhere and our students experience period subs. CA has changed their CTC requirements. Something is wrong? We all needed to pass the CBEST, RICA, and CSET, and then do our time in student teaching. Now, waivers for many of these areas are going to be implemented. Highly qualified, no I think not as too many classes are filled with a body.

I have an idea. Let's require everyone to get vaccinated. That probably won't exacerbate the situation any.

A very common dilemma due to the bashing and disrespect toward our profession. The colleges have been saying that the number of students enrolling in their courses that lead to teaching degrees are dwindling. The cost of a 4 year education is very high and the pay for teachers is low in comparison. Three years ago analysts warned that at the current enrollment levels in teaching degree programs, there would not be enough educators to fill the positions of those retiring. Our district has hired a fulltime substitute for each building. If someone is absent that person is put into the position first. Then others are called through our automated sub system. Often teachers are still asked to give up their prep time to cover a class, for which they are compensated financially, but it is getting really hard. We no longer can take days off to attend conferences during the school week. If no one is absent (rare occurrence) the building sub can be loaned to another building in the district that is in need, or they may be given work that assists struggling students or helps teachers to prepare for lessons, such as copying, laminating, etc.

Our building got a permanent sub last year, too. We still used our automated sub caller first, but apparently a lot of people don’t like to sub high school. So the office would go to him as a last resort for no-show subs or sudden teacher absences that were never filled. He had classes to cover nearly every day.

Our district is super short and yes it’s all hands on deck. So sad that it has come to this reality where no one wants to teach anymore.

What are prep teachers? Do you mean specialists? They’re not just there for your prep!

We have a teacher shortage, a support staff shortage, a custodian shortage, & a bus driver shortage. And it’s only going to get worse, a significant number of teachers will be eligible for retirement at the end of this year. A different local district just announced to parents the week before school starts, sorry, no buses. The mother quoted in the article says she doesn’t know what to do, they have one car & 2 kids in 2 different buildings at 2 different levels that start at the same time, & her husband needs the car for work, it’s a district just outside of Detroit with many lower income families. And we have none of those “extra” positions to pull teachers out of, teachers teach classes, our only teacher coaches are full time teachers that coach sports for students. I don’t even know what a prep teacher is, nor do I know what an academic teacher is (aren’t we all teaching academics?). It’s a train wreck.

like

A coach is someone who works with classroom teachers. They are typically former classroom teachers themselves and they support and coach teachers in a specific area.

likefunny

I think it's very telling that local communities want school offered in person, but aren't willing to come into the buildings to sub.

Every district is going to be short on staff and the situation is going to get much worse before it gets better. The job carries a much greater risk than it used to and the expectation is that we move the kids along. This creates a feeling that it is just not worth the risk, so people leave the profession either to do something else or retire. Integrity goes a long way to improving the work place and it is in sorely lacking in our education system, especially at the middle school and high school levels.

like

Sorry your having a teacher shortage. My district is having a teachers surplus as student leave traditional public schools.

Our district hired a boatload of support staff (academic, IT, social/emotional).

like

Our district has done the same thing. At my school alone we have almost double the number of admin and support staff than we had 3 years ago and our enrollment is down. Their duties and responsibilities have been divided up while at the same time they have doubled the admin tasks for teachers. They have added daily character ed classes into our schedule, require more reports, and added extra meetings for us. On top of all this they make procedure changes that negate work we have already prepped: new lesson plan template, curriculum overhauls, and switching courses we have previously taught. We managed to avoid switching our LMS like they intended, but it is still so much.

Prep teachers? I haven’t heard that term. What is their normal role?

For us elementary students go to specials taught by specialists, special education students go to the Resource Room, but not during specials as Resource Room is meant to enhance & losing a specials class is seen by students as missing the “fun”. 😊 While this practice does give the elementary teachers their prep, prep teacher sounds demeaning, these “specialists” are teachers who are all certified with one if not two college degrees.

YES we are SHORT! I am the ONLY math teacher in my building and I have given up my planning period each day to take on another subject because those students have an "end of course" test worth 20% of their grade! I was told yesterday that we have NO math or science teachers in the applicant pool...so much for STEM & STEAM I guess...#exhaustednewteachertwoyearsin

Yepp. I brought home covid to everyone in my house and babysitters house after my students came to school after their parents tested positive. I refused to quaratine from my children (including my 2 month old infant), so I am out for 24 days. I am a self-contained behavioral class and they have had to pull resource teachers to cover my class. Then they went as far as blaming the students' behavior on me and my absence. Why would I even want to go back?

like

Exactly! I had 5 days of school with the kids. How was I supposed to get 12 behavioral/nonverbal kids in 4 grade levels to "behave" in 5 days? 🤦‍♀️

Truly, some of those people (TOSA’s, academic specialist and even supervisors) need to be placed back in the classroom. They have forgotten what it is like to teach a classroom and the students themselves have changed so much in the last 10 years.

like

We have had an increase in enrollment, higher than precovid numbers by about 200. Our staff shortage is from unvaccinated staff members catching covid. We were fully staffed until then. A neighboring district announced staff shortage and rearranged certified staff into content areas with subs in elective classes and central office certified members are back in the classroom as well.

like

I am vaccinated and I am out with covid. #teamdelta 🤦‍♀️

likehelpful

Forcing “vaccines” may be exasperating the shortage already caused by low pay and added responsibilities.

smart

If that’s the case, it’s stupid. We are required to have TB tests. We are required to have other vaccinations. We are required to submit to background checks. These things are part of the job when you work in close contact with other humans, especially vulnerable ones. It’s like my mom telling me how her nurses are quitting because they’re required to be vaccinated. It’s such a joke. If you work in healthcare, you are required to be vaccinated. We work with kids, some of whom can’t be vaccinated. We should be vaccinated. Americans are so unbelievably myopic and selfish.

Several school in our area have been forced to use long-term subs because they couldn’t fill positions. Not good.

like

It certainly is a contributing factor. Huge portion.

like

It’s like all the subs vanished! What happened? They showed a sub graduation class (whatever that is) and it was like 5 people for a whole district. Teachers are being paid to pull additional classes throughout the day. All voluntary, for now……what is going on??

helpful

Same here! We were notified by the district that pn days will not be honored. TOSAs, principals and district staff have been "subbing".

like

What is a PN day? Is that personal leave?

While attending Catholic school in the first grade I was really naughty and sneaked in the empty classroom during recess with a friend. We raided the treasure chest full of goodies (candy, stickers, snacks) and stuffed them in our backbacks. When it was time for class, our teacher noticed the missing treasures and made us all sit in silence until one of us cracked. Someone ratted on my friend, I was in the clear, and my friend never told on me. I still feel bad about it. : (

So, I had to be away for two days. On my way back into town, I stopped at my classroom, just to make sure it was still standing.
