My dream is to be able to do a perfect push up and pull up one day 🙈🙈 (30s F) found a CrossFit near me and the community seems kind - do you think CrossFit is the right answer for me or it’s for more advanced folks?

My weight is fine, really need to build strength. Have strength trained on and off but never on a systematic routinefor months

if you want to build strength, build strength. lift weights. do pull-up progression [negatives, rows, banded] - rows/lat work. push-up progression [incline, floor press, etc] work with a trainer who will focus on strength and progressive overload.

I’m an ex -crossfitter and love the community. however the programming isn’t specifically targeting strength. it’s targeting overall general fitness. and it doesn’t work towards individual goals.

if you want to get stronger - focus on that.

Do it! Every CrossFit gym is run differently so really depends. Try it and see. I had so much fun in college doing CrossFit and working at a local gym at the front desk. So much fun times and I lost 30 lb (was a college age F at that time) and got very strong. 250 deadlift 215 squat at 20. Could do sets of two strict pull ups. Miss those days.

I’ve heard way too many horror stories about injuries from cross fit, it’s dead to me. Have you ever worked with a personal trainer?

EY1, a lot of those horror stories are likely from the early days of CrossFit when it was spreading like wildfire. There were A LOT of crappy boxes that would throw haphazard programming at folks with very little training.

Many of the weaker / crappier boxes have closed and what's left are high quality boxes that focus on form, skill, and scaling.

CrossFit is probably not the best place to do perfect pull ups 😂 but if you’re trying to get fit and need a routine CrossFit is great. The community is usually very welcoming. I’ve been to a bunch of CrossFit gyms and some were truly terrible and some were wonderful. I haven’t done CrossFit in years but I still keep in touch with some folks that I used to workout with. If you’re interested, another thing to consider is getting into rock climbing. That will definitely help the upper body strength and has a good community too

Kipping pull-ups have a different intended stimulus than strict pull-ups. Still pull-ups nonetheless.

I did CrossFit for a few months and it was good to build form/strength. I started bulking up which isn’t what I wanted but definitely builds strength depending on the coach that’s working you. Do it for a month and see how you respond. Echo comment above, each location is run differently.

My sister always complains about wanting to lose weight (I weigh ~30 pounds less than her) but when I offer her solutions she turns them down. I tend to eat vegetable-focused and high protein meals when I cook and avoid processed carbs (except when I go out of course). She says my diet is too restrictive when I tell her I can give her recipes and make a grocery list for her.
