My dream is to one day be a legal correspondent for a major news channel. If you have an aligned path, how did you go about getting in to the media space? I would love any kind of information, even if your experience isn’t exactly the same.

In my experience, you could:
1) write blogs/op-eds on legal news of the day;
2) connect with reporters who report on the legal news you write about;
3) if the topic becomes relevant again, they might interview you for an article or even in podcasts.

After that, it’s really about whether network bookers know about you and are willing to book you.

Adjunct in a sexy practice area at an LA or NYC law school so you show up when those reporters/booking interns Google “election law expert” or “cannabis law expert” or whatever. I’m convinced that’s how a couple of my profs ended up as cable news talking heads lol.

You’re so right. The hardest part is taking the plunge and not being afraid to fail on it. Thank you!

I’m at a small shop and my bosses regularly anchor and/or appear on two major cable news networks. Boss A is/was politically connected and pretty sure he got Boss B into the scene. I don’t know how they linked up w the news outlets first.

They’ve asked me to consider getting my feet wet in my niche areas so I might. I’m more of a face for radio prob. I guess it’s just networking.

How to break the phone habit???

I was never a big phone gal (forgetting it at home ignoring it for hours) until COVID. It hit 6 months after my husband lost his dad and he has always been pretty screen dependent. Because shit was heavy and I didn’t want to push (plus I was locked inside with him) I just started echoing his habit of picking up my phone.

I went into private practice this year and I have a TERRIBLE habit of picking up my phone when stressed. I HATE it. (con’t)

I am having negotiations with a start up company, that i dont wish to join. Is it unethical to accept offer letter and then not join. The letter would help me in negotiations in other companies.

No poach agreements (i.e., we agree not to solicit each other’s employees) in customer contracts are a no-no for antitrust reasons, right? A customer is pretty adamant that they want it in but I feel like this is black and white. Would love to know if any of you are seeing them in your customer contracts and whether you’re including “unless prohibited by law” type of language to CYA.

My manager consistently makes condescending remarks about my work even though I’m overworked and prioritize what is urgent. I regularly work 12-13+ hours a day but never receive any confirmation or recognition that I’m doing a good job and there is always something to criticise.

Why have unions become so powerless in recent years? A decade ago, the collective bargaining units would get wage increases that matched or exceeded inflationary growth. Now we are lucky to see any positive integer offered.

Realistically, if they are merely securing my job for $100/month they are not providing value! I can protect my own job, AND pay for a decent retirement with that money saved.

How do my fellow litigators deal with hearings that don’t go so well? Whether you fumble over your words, don’t make all the points you wanted to make, or the judge is annoyed and/or gives a bad ruling, etc. I just had a hearing this morning where the judge granted my motion but only after acting annoyed and coming very close to denying it. Now I am replaying in my head what I could’ve done differently and kind of beating myself up. Does this happen to any anyone else?

Currently doing ID (car accidents, premises, general negligence). Although I am doing higher exposure cases, running entire litigation dockets on my own, and doing some more complex work, I just feel that I am stuck making crap money the rest of my life.
