I am in similar boat. I have been approached externally for higher pay but same level. I don’t want to use that leverage to get a promotion but I think if I don’t get one then I am leaving

That’s great, sounds less like “pushed out” and more like “pushed out of the nest to fly”
Yes, it’s all about how you position it.
Explain what you said above, and ensure you mention feedback in 2 prior reviews. Tell them you’ve been working hard to get to senior and based on prior conversations you think you’re there. Ask what you need to do, or work on, to get promoted in the next 3 to 6 months.
Dear boss, I enjoy being here and would really like to engage in x,y and z even more. I know your plan was to hire a sr engineer, I feel that it would be beneficial to the firm and me if instead of the expense of hiring, onboarding and waiting for that sr engineer to learn the whereabouts of our firm to be productive I can grow into that role and we save by getting someone more junior to increase our leverage.
Please don’t send an email and have a conversation instead.
Also, depending on your review cycle, sometimes it’s too late for the current year to do this. Best to have these conversations ahead of the review cycle, in my experience. Start the discussion and keep it top of mind when the promotion cycle starts.
Thanks for all the feedback! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
What's the salary difference between a senior engineer and yours? If there's a big difference, then go for it. If not, then ask for a raise only.
