Iām a people person and have no shame in reaching out to meet with someone to connect over coffee, meal, bubble tea, etc. Iām where I am because of my friends and industry connects.
It's hard to do it organically nowadays unless you get an opportunity to meet people through working on projects and internal initiatives. I have been fortunate to be connected with right leaders who introduced me and pulled me into initiatives that I met many people from. When you do have these chances, take advantage - build relationships with those you connect with whether professionally or more on a personal level. Show you are a rockstar and they will naturally throw your name out there, connect you with next opportunities. If you do get exposed to areas of interest, be proactive and reach out.
I find out the names of people Iām interested in talking to and write them an email letting them know that Iām interested in talking with them for xyz reasons, and that I have abc to offer. And politely ask for 30 minutes on their calendar. And then when I get that conversation, I am my friendly self, share my personal and professional story and my personality. It works! You may not feel itās organic but when you are real, a nice person, and thinking about the value you can bring to other people, that will get you far
But⦠weāre asian Americans⦠so donāt we have both East and west cultures? Lol at least I do. Take the bests parts of either cultures. š So no, I didnāt have that problem. Cause I donāt burden ppl in the quality of my work and significance of my contribution, but I network because I know itās a help me help you /barter situation. You got to be clear about these things and not mush things together. It wonāt do you any good! š„°
You just have to overcome the cultural stigma and go for it. Business professionals who have been in the game know when you reach out that you either genuinely want to connect (ie, learn more about their story), or want something (ie, a job or selling them a product/ service). 99% of the time itās the latter and they know this; be personable, relatable and differentiate your introduction from everyone else.
Networking isn't always about "getting". Sometimes GIVING can help you network too. Great at throwing company events? Offer to lead an event. Thought leadership?
