Wait until you are married.

Thank you. We already live together which is why we were wondering but thanks!

My husband and I lived together for a few years before we got married so had a joint credit card and checking account for household things and trips prior to marriage. We’ve been together for 20 years now, so it seems to have worked out ok. 😉 We have a chase sapphire card for all the points and benefits.

For the credit cards, one of us is the account holder and the other is the authorized user. I think we just set it up that way because it was easier to do the application. I think when you do that though the authorized user doesn’t get access to the online account unless you give them the log in details. (You don’t each have separate log in details.)

My wife and I waited to combine until we were married even when we lived together. We just thought it made sense to wait to formally combine everything. Also keep in mind that it might be easier to wait if either of you are changing your name. We have Ally for checking and love it but we kept separate credit cards.

My wife and I chose to keep ours separate, but we have very different pay bands. I usually pay for the big stuff and she helps with a lot of the small stuff. Just something to consider if you go that path!

FYI My partner and I have Capital One Quicksilver card and you can add someone as an admin user ie they can log in with their info and still see all the transactions

likehelpful

That admin option is dope and a differentiator for Capital One. It's pretty frustrating that my wife either needs to manage two logins for a couple of our cards, or can't review her own purchases on the cards I'm primary.

Can’t speak for you but we made everything joint right after we got married. As far as best bank or credit card, what are you looking for?

like

Thanks! We both have Chase but they seem to have a lot of fees so open to other places too. Also wanted to get a credit card together but not sure which ones allow joint versus the authorized user option that I see more often

Just had this discussion too and waiting til post marriage. We both have Chase already so going to just open another account there.

Good to know S1! Just not something we want to fuss with at the moment

As far as I've seen, no one does "joint" credit cards anymore. Someone is just an additional authorized user. That becomes relevant because unless you share login information, the additional user typically has no ability to view account details, activity, etc. So if you do your personal banking with Chase, then go to do a joint card with Chase, your spouse will either see none of your Chase accounts or all of them (if you share the login). Ideally neither of you have anything to hide and are transparent enough to avoid an issue with the all or nothing visibility, but my point is that credit cards aren't truly joint anymore.

My wife and I opened 1 joint bank account prior to marriage to both contribute money to for the wedding. We opened chase accounts because they had a decent cash bonus for a certain contribution level. We are married and still keep our finances and credit cards separate and signed prenups, but after marriage we also opened a joint robo advisor account also w chase and we contribute an equal amount to it each month.

Going to get married soon: besides tradition, what are the benefits of combining?

Best wishes for a happy future! You sound like you are on a great path.

Just wait, most likely everything is going to be good but easier to have separate accounts just in the rare case something happens.

Is it normal for you to ever be “ghosted” by your administration? I feel like I’m constantly emailing, calling, texting, and meeting with them and nothing gets done. As soon as I leave their office, I’m ignored. If I email/text them a question or request, I’m ignored unless it benefits them. This is at a district where I travel between 3 schools and have 3 principals. They’re all like this and communication is especially important since I have to travel.
