My firm just switched to unlimited vacation days. People whose firms already have this policy, how's this policy actually work in reality? Do you take less days than you used to?

I hear of UX/Product designers that make 120k out of school and recruiters are throwing out numbers even greater than that. No visibility into what my coworkers are making so I’m here.

I have 8 years of design experience in addition to design education, 3 of those years are in UX/Product design. I’m making $102k, med/vis/dental, up to 6% 401k match, unlimited PTO and options worth ~10k vested in a couple years. Bonus last year was ~10%. NYC startup.

We just found out we’re pregnant with twins! Definitely a shock, but we are excited. Anyone here have twins and/or willing to share tips? I’m only 9 weeks so still have a long ways to go. Thankfully my firm has a generous maternity leave policy. Obviously I have not broken the news to my firm yet; however, I’m already experiencing guilt for highly litigated matters that I’m on and know when my leave would start is a few months out from trial - anyone else feel this work guilt?

My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

When do partners decide when an associate is good enough to make partner? I’m a senior and it is extremely clear to me when an associate has it or doesn’t, and moreover it doesn’t take eight years to figure it out; it takes just one or two matters for me to know if they’re adding value or are ultimately just a commodity. It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that associates are largely being strung along by partners who are going to can them at some point, long after that decision is made.

I got a recruiter call who said that midlevel transactional associates are receiving $100-500k signing bonuses to lateral. I wasn’t planning a move but then the call got me curious. I’m a 3rd year in biglaw, worked out of the NYC office before wfh. Went on vaca to Miami recently and absolutely loved it... thinking of moving there. My firm has an office in Miami too. Few Qs: 1) are big firms typically ok with office transfers? (I heard I have a good rep with the seniors and partners). 2) is it easy to just change your address in workday to FL so that income taxes are not deducted? Obviously I’ll have to work with an accountant for end of year taxes and such. Cont’d below...
