My firm pays staff & seniors hourly, with 1.5x pay for overtime. Firm just cut our hours from the normal 58-60 down to 40 a week for the foreseeable future. Should I be concerned about layoffs?

They're doing that to avoid layoffs for as long as possible. Consider it a gift

Be realistic - Yes, you should be concerned about layoffs. Unless you know that your company has a significant amount of FCF in reserve and open credit lines, it’s business could be in jeopardy in these uncertain times.

like

A lot of this could be in part to the extended due dates and clients not being able to provide you information right now. No need to schedule people for 60 hours when there’s only 40 hours of work. Wouldn’t surprise me if it picks up in July (if the due date isn’t further extended).

Small public accounting firm in VA. Don’t want to disclose since it’s so small my co-workers might be able to figure out who I am.

Does anyone think it’s weird that my firm is bending over backwards to try to keep a first year staff from leaving the firm after she was rated a 2 this year. But now she’s trying to leave and they keep trying to push her to stay saying she can be a partner in 8-9 years and laying it all out in detail. The issue is they laid off other staff (all but her) so maybe that’s it? Find it very odd.

Tech company lay offs….are they soon to be inevitable?!

There is lots of companies really taking a hit in the tech space. Is this something that people are nervous about? Many seem to still be having a hiring push but with the button falling (IMO this is still just start we have a long way to go to bottom out) will that halt and layoffs ensue? And if so, which depts do you think will get hit the hardest?

I filed my tax with TurboTax. It said my estimated refund is $700. I got a letter from IRS saying I actually owe $400. When I looked into it I realized they didn’t account for my 2021 quarterly estimates that I paid with my ex-wife last year. In our divorce decree we agreed to claim half of the credits each. But I guess for their record it’s all under her name. It’s impossible to reach IRS and also I really want to avoid contacting my ex. What would be the best approach for this?

After I realised I couldn't maintain all the unpaid overtime I was working I decided to take a turn and go to compliance, so now I work in CT compliance. I feel very surpressed.
