My firm’s support staff went through a shuffle and my former assistant got a promotion. I’m so happy for her, but was bummed to lose her as my day to day support. I was assigned a new legal assistant and we just are not vibing. Most recently, she changed my wording on something without asking. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any tips?

If you haven’t already I’d ask to meet with them to discuss your preferences on things. This may be something her prior attorney liked or asked her to frequently do. Let her know the intent and proactiveness on her end is appreciated but any edits outside of what you’ve given her need to be highlighted or flagged going forward. If it’s a hard no for you then just tell her that.

I had an assistant do this and they thought they were being proactive and helpful. While on one hand it was, i had to explain to him the reason he shouldn’t do that and while his intentions are appreciated it wasn’t necessary in this instance and to stick to the revisions marked. Just ended up creating more work than necessary.

I miss having an assistant (a real one). Recently lateraled from a team that had a pair of two Boomers that got things done. New firm relies on recent college grads killing time before law school. Results are about what you’d expect.

Currently make $100k with a 10% bonus, would I even get a higher salary in industry at this stage? Also might be worth noting I have an MPH. Thanks!

Question for senior female bosses. I have an opportunity to network with a senior woman across the pond - what, from your perspective, makes for a good mentor/mentee relationship? My only female mentor is my direct boss and my other mentors are senior men that I’ve known for years and have a relaxed / friendly relationship with.

I really want to get the most out of this but haven’t built a formal relationship with a senior woman before (particularly with a culture difference)

How long is too long to wait for a raise? I've been waiting seven years and have had 2 title (and responsibility) promotions since the last raise. My manager says I deserve it and am long overdue. The CEO says we "can't afford it" and that "there are things that matter more than money." That's easy for someone not living paycheck to paycheck (during an inflation crisis) to say. I don't know what to do. How long is normal to wait? Especially with an employee's market like this?

Our district is so lax on the students this year. With tech issues and distance learning days, we’ve gone from accommodating to enabling real quick. No penalties for late work, taking excuses for attendance, lower academic and behavioral standards... We were beginning to make so much progress on transforming our school culture, but this year is erasing that and then some. Is anyone else concerned about how to raise the expectations and students’ self-discipline back to pre-enabling levels?

I kind of think people should be asked to wait until after November 15 to share their promotion news until all the agency has been given their news. As a courtesy.

I love my job and the people I work with, but there’s one thing that really bothers me: the lack of diversity. Sometimes when I walk into the office and see everyone else around me as the only POC, it feels kind of weird. I don’t think anyone here has ever said anything racist or sexist to me personally, but I don’t feel comfortable talking about these issues with anyone because they might take it personally and then things could get awkward between us.

A startup offered me stock options for my support. Now they want to start paying me part time and also offer me increased stake in the company. I'm in North Carolina... and I resigned after eighteen years, with MONTHS of leave I'd accrued and never used. The sheer amount of work put on us was the proverbial straw (documenting EVERY student and parent contact, attendance, then updating attendance, grace-filled grades with no accountability from students, on TOP of the extra state requirements requiring IEP changes from switching back to all virtual from hybrid, and vice-versa.) I am done. I'm just done. And bummed about all that leave...
