My first week in-house as a seasoned professional in a specialized area of law, learning that we have a totally unnecessary process in place, which was set up by my boss, a European attorney allegedly well versed in our specialized area of law. How do I delicately inform that “the process you set up and team you hired to do X is based on a misunderstanding of the law. You don’t have to do X. You can do Y instead, which is what everyone else does, it’s easy and free & doesn’t require a team.”

My position is newly created by my boss. Small legal department, midsize company.

I wouldn't gun like this during my first week. Wait a few weeks so it looks like you are learning the processes and things...sometimes things exist because that's how they always been done and people are protective of changing it up. Talk to the guy and ask him to explain it and slowly pick it apart without him knowing.

So… it really depends on the culture of your company and your boss’s personality. At many places, you’d get mad appreciation and props for saying something like that. The business teams would love you for immediately adding value and making their lives easier. Buuuuut, I don’t know your boss. Does he have a fragile ego? Is he easily offended?

Good luck! How they react will tell you a lot about the type of place you’ve joined.

How have you broke the news to your boss that you’re looking to make a career change and leave the practice? I am the Sr. Paralegal at my firm (7+ years) and work for a solo practitioner in a very busy wage & hour class action practice. We have one other legal assistant and law clerk. I don’t want to burn bridges, but after seeing how he gave the cold shoulder to his paralegal of 10+ years after going on maternity leave and never coming back, I don’t see how I can’t expect the same treatment.

I’m looking for advice (I understand that it might be suck it up). I’m a young in-house attorney. I’m getting great experience but I don’t get guidance, training, advice, etc from my boss and she’s a perfectionist. So the feedback I do get is, mistakes can’t happen. We are extremely understaffed and her solution is an intern for me to oversee. Does anyone have any thoughts on how handle this situation?

How are the paralegals in your department organized/structured? What are the pros and cons? We’re exploring the idea of a paralegal center of excellence. Currently paralegals are reporting to the lawyers they support. The disadvantages are that the paralegals are siloed, so there’s no back-up if they’re out and they don’t have anyone who can support them if their work gets too busy. Additionally, the lawyers have a hard time accurately evaluating them since they can’t easily compare their work.

Just started working in-house within the last couple of months. First real attorney gig after doing compliance. The GC was terminated and I had to fill in the role as GC (even though that’s not what I’m called). My company says they don’t need a GC. Talked to my boss today and they want to hire another to take things off my plate since I am the only attorney. They plan to rewrite my job position to do more risk and compliance. Am I wrong for feeling like I should have been included in the convo?

Is it weird to ask during an interview in house whether there is any time tracking?

Context: I’m leaving my current job because I absolutely despise billing and cannot get with the “record your hours” program. I have ADHD so jumping from project to project is important for me to keep my focus (it’s what works for me), and having to stop and bill messes up that chaotic rhythm I found. So I want to be 100% sure there will be no tracking my daily time in this new position.
