My friend has an accounting degree but has been a stay at home mom for 2 years. She didn’t do much accounting work after she graduated to focus on the baby. She did some AR work part time before she went on maternity leave. She feels like she has forgotten the main accounting concepts and wants a refresher. What can she do?

Take a job at a local CPA firm. They may initially hire her as a bookkeeper but she will get a variety of exposure and on the job training right away and will either be able to move up or bounce fairly quickly.

How about start preparing CPA exams? Should be able to help her refresh the memory

like

The CPA exam requires 150 credits and job experience which she doesn’t have. I don’t know if she’d want to spend so much time studying for it when her main worry is she needs a job. I know how consumed I was when studying for that exam and I don’t think that would be the right approach for her right now.

Maybe she’d be interested in a temp position? I get emails all the time from Robert Half about AR jobs - it’s what I did before public accounting.

Intern at CPA firm

I only learn through practical application (so school didn't help much) so if it were me, I'd look for an entry level job. The only thing that may be helpful for those jobs is a QB (and/or QBO) certification. Most small US-based businesses still use quickbooks.

There are many 100% remote bookkeeping jobs as well (mostly for QB based clients). There will be less learning exposure than in an office setting though.
