My friend is a “pool consultant” ... and insists we are both “consultants” ... not looking for advice, just frustrating dealing with idiots.

“Over the past five years, the Swimming Pools industry has grown by 2.2% to reach revenue of $1bn in 2018. In the same timeframe, the number of businesses has grown by 2.7% and the number of employees has grown by 3.5%”

Sounds like your friend knows how to get his piece of the pie!

I generally agree with the negative reaction to this “elitist” post . . . but having said this. . . I was once at a house warming party in London having a conversation with an old lady (who had a proper old school cockney accent straight out of Mary Poppins).

The conversation went like this:

Old Lady: “What do you do?”

Me: “I’m a consultant”

Old lady: “Oh, so are me and my husband Fergus”

I looked at her 70-year-old husband Fergus with suspicion

Me : “Oh really, what kind of consulting do you do?”

Old lady: “Fish”

Turns out they used to own a fish and chips shop nearby. OK, I admit it, I’m an elitist.

Your friend deserves better friends

likefunnysmarthelpful

Yes I do 😂

Do they not work with clients on content related to their industry? Sounds like consulting to me. This is very elitist

He is not wrong

What kind of pool? The one with water or the ones with balls?

My friend is an IT consultant... insists we are both consultants. What do I do?

OP, you’re the idiot but you don’t realize it. What does that say about you?

likefunnysmart

He’s not an idiot. He’s still a consultant in his field. Granted you do different types of consulting

likeuplifting

Say ok and move on. You should have better things to worry about than what a lowly pool boy thinks

likefunnyhelpful

I used to be a pool poor, I didn’t feel lowly. Maybe the pool ain’t the only thing he’s cleaning out with that long pole.

likefunnyuplifting

Is your friend on fishbowl? If not, he’s obviously not a consultant. Only true test

Pretty sure he replied early on as SC1.

This isn’t exactly how Op figured this post would go

I am a 41 year old female and live in an area where the majority of moms don’t work big jobs. When asked what I do, and I reply “I’m a consultant”, this is regularly assumed to be a skin care or jewelry or whatever MLM consultant. It does not bother me that someone who sells make up on Facebook is a consultant and so am I as a Big 4 firm partner.

like

I’m only annoyed when someone makes that assumption bc they assume it’s not possible that I work a corporate job. I finished my degree as an adult and busted ass to get the experience to be here so sometimes people (not friends but those folks you have to encounter at family gatherings and social events) assume that, bc I work at PwC, ANYONE can get a job here. Or that I work the front desk.

I am said pool consultant. This guy is an elitist. Aquatic consultants for life.

This is real. His name is Charlie.

Definition of consultant is "person who provides expert advice professionally", so if he gets paid to advise people about a pool, he satisfies the definition.

like

And by that definition, a huge chunk of people on this forum aren't really consultants, since, let's be honest, it takes more than one project to be an expert.

likefunny

Bro do you realize how much SI work we do...less consulting than that lol

Everyone here trying to take a moral high ground stfu, we’ve all seen outrageous job titles with “consultant” in it and thought this is very different than what I do. Lay off OP

like

This whole thread has been brought you by the phrase "virtue signalling."

You all can act indignant at OP, but you're either lying to yourselves or are part of a vocal minority.

Honestly refreshing to be reminded about how everyone else doesn’t see life as “consulting” or “banking” like us poor souls..
