My friends little sister is graduating undergrad and has an offer from Strategy& for $100k and McKinsey for $90k (pretty sure McK is going to bump soon). Im obviously biased to McK but want to show her other perspectives. Which one should she choose and why??

And and all feedback is welcomed!

As a McKinsey employee who had a mixed set of experiences in my last 3 years at the firm, I would still recommend McKinsey over S&. I think especially for BAs, the opportunities are tremendous and the network is great. Also there is potential of firm sponsorship if she wants to do MBA later on. If it were an option between McKinsey and a non-consulting firm, my perspective might have been different. Happy to chat more if helpful.

These posts keep shocking me…
1. I think you can have great ethics and work at Mck. They are a great firm that do lots of good things and some bad, I believe unfortunately more than their fair share because I believe part of their culture pushes them more to do some of these (eg. I had some dodgy people offering to play intermediares roles that we rejected and ended up supporting Mck getting projects). When you are #1 you fight very strongly to remain there and there is some arrogance that comes with that. But as I said, I have very good friends in there that are not proud of some of the things but try to change things from the inside and are happy where they are
2. I just don’t believe on black or white decisions. It is undoubtedly that Mck is the #1 brand and if that’s important for you/your friend go for it. But there are lots of other factors that could be relevant to you (eg. How you connect with people, career projection, strength of specific markets/practices, culture, international expertise, etc) - I don’t know S& well enough to opine, but definitely other firms would have a different value proposition that could be better or worse for different people. I was shocked the other day when a senior partner of Mck reached out to see if interested in moving, and literally the ONLY reason he kept using was brand…
3. As I said, I have very good friends at Mck, but it is true that being #1 generates some arrogance (happens in every industry), but some of the responses of Mck just don’t help the firm. Some people really believe that if you are not at Mck is because you could make it…

My advice to your friend is to ask both firms that she would like to get them know better and speak to different people in that office and then decide (this is what I did long time ago and what made me decide OW over Mck; I don’t think there is a right or wrong, but a right or wrong for each of us)

In any case, good luck with the decision!

Don't take strategy &

I think you're unfortunately right about having her lean towards McK

Also, is she single?

likefunnysmart

S& unless she is okay at working in the corruption practice

likefunnyupliftingsmart

McK 16, I understand you’re being sarcastic here, while I also believe McKinsey is a significantly stronger consultancy than OW, but don’t think this is an appropriate response to OW 1 remarks either.

We’re going to raise it to $100k at year end. Don’t be so short-sighted as to miss out on the McKinsey brand. Even if it was $10k less, it’s still the better offer. B4 exits are significantly worse. Source: used to work in B4

$100k is confirmed for new hires, I had a friend of mine have them redo his contract for this

Smart enough to get into McKinsey stupid enough not to be able to make the decision? Go to strategy& then

McKinsey 100%. Brand is so much better for the long term, unless she wants to go into politics

likefunny

Why is this even a question?

likefunny

Mck will have better exits and will unquestionably match, not really sure this is a question given that WLB will probably be similar and the inevitable brand dilution of S& being owned be B4

I would take McKinsey $50k over S& $120k anytime

Health insurance and perks alone at McKinsey get close to closing the perceived 10k difference.

We should send all S& to McK… 😂 Nothing better than entitled rich folks that go to expensive schools. I’m joking… relax

Yeah good point. Strategy& and McK are your “I didn’t go to [Ivy League school] so I could do [insert mundane activity they get paid a boatload to do]” crowd.

I would say strategy&. If she is comparing stray& and MBB on same footing; probably she won’t be a good fit anyways

likefunny

I don't think she's actually considering it. I find that it's human nature to want to assume both offers you get are good, even if there's a clear one. This is because the feeling of knowing two groups want you is incredible and rare. She is basking in the moment, but will end up choosing McKinsey. It's just the obvious choice and no offense taken either way.

I’m in industry and have hired both, from a client perspective McKinsey is better. I worked at PwC in advisory as well and didn’t see a difference between as& and advisory

Plus exits from McK can be much better and $10k is nothing in the long run

McK for sure
