Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service
Bless you PMs.

My thoughts are that if the idea of this training is scary or concerning to you, you are the reason they are necessary.

I have been through various trainings on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics and on unconscious bias. I think they are extremely helpful and very insightful.
The unconscious bias training we did was probably one of the most eye-opening ones of these I have done. One of the most useful conversations that we had was about how when we are hiring people we will often say we don’t want someone because they “aren’t a good fit” but we were asked to challenge ourselves on using that phrase. Are we just looking for people who are just like us to work with us? Would we benefit from different experiences and perspectives? I said that often when I use that phrase it’s a euphemism or code for there being something else wrong with the candidate and I am trying to be nice. The trainer said it was up to me to be able to convey why I didn’t like a candidate better than that. So, if it’s really that the guy came off as an arrogant know-it-all who would be hard to manage and work with, then say that instead of “not a good fit”. Otherwise, you can hide a lot under the umbrella of that phrase.
Another good example was where we all had to raise our hands when asked whether certain things applied to us in a series of questions. You could see very quickly how different the experiences of our various colleagues are. One question was whether a security guard has ever followed you through a store. None of the white people raised their hands. Our POC did raise their hands. Another question was whether someone had pulled their purse away from you when walking down the street. Again, no white people raised their hands. POC men did. It’s opened my eyes to the fact that even in highly educated and successful fields and companies, we have people who are experiencing such things.
I have definitely grown and changed a lot as a person as a result. I think learning how to be more aware and sensitive of others is never a bad idea. When we know better, we can do better.
I would love more details on this training if possible. Might be something that our company could look to incorporate. Anyone has any ideas or resources they can point me to?

Did a few hour long online interactive courses as part of larger annual compliance trainings. Short videos followed by basically mindfulness questions. The message was good. Now the delivery... Why does everything HR touches feel like a stock photo?
