My GF just ended her big 4 internship and has a full time offer to start in about 6 months. Realistically doesn’t make sense for her to get a random part time job in between, especially with COVID.

Thoughts on whether she should try and claim unemployment benefits during that time? Would she even be approved? Is it “unethical” since she has future employment lined up? NY for reference.

Tell her to work on CPA and let her live off your salary

like

She’s already done with CPA and Masters, otherwise this would’ve been a good suggestion lol (except my salary part 😂). She’ll basically be doing nothing for 6 months

Idk if it’s a question of ethics, idk if it’s legal to go for unemployment. Thought it was only after losing a job or fired or furloughed. Simply not being in the workforce isn’t enough to claim unemployment. Could be wrong, but it’s my understanding

like

She should absolutely get a part time job. Anything can happen in 6 months.

like

I had a 6 month break between school and full time. Tell her to check out “Accountemps” and “Robert Half Accountants.” They place accountants/future CPAs in contract rolls in industry. I found a contract roll for my entire 6 months where a company just needed some help on a one-off project that they were doing. Paid me $32 an hour and knew the entire time that I was leaving for KPMG at the end of it.

If she doesn't need or want the money then why bother working? If she wants some money then she'll probably have to work.

like

Nah the hell with the noise get the unemployment dude. There’s a chance of free money right here, and she won’t take it?

It’s not like she’s taking it away from someone else, that money was always there. And if anything the US treasury loves printing money.

Maybe she can find a nannying/babysitting gig if she’s good with kids? That’s what I did in the in between of graduation and my start date, it’s nice easy money and people are desperate for some extra help with kids in virtual school

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??

Tax question - I make about $200k and get half of my income from a W-2 and another half from being an independent contractor. Because, I’m subject to pay both FICA and SECA taxes. Do my social security taxes get capped on amounts paid above the ~$140k threshold across both my W-2 and 1099 incomes or am I out of luck and have to pay more than that since only about 100k of my income is FICA and the other 100K is SECA (which is subject to ~12% overall including the ER portion)?
