My goal since early 2020 was to hit $100k NW by Dec 2021. It’s going to be March 2022 and I’m at $86k 😔 It’s mostly due to healthcare-related bills I didn’t anticipate.
Trying to decide if I should still go through with a 1 week trip to Spain in May that I’ve been wanting to do for years :/

Take the trip. It’s great to have goals. It’s also important to have flexibility in them so they don’t cost you happiness.

likeuplifting

What's your reasoning for wanting to hit 100k NW? If it's just to say you have 100k, I see no reason why you'd cancel a trip that makes you happy. It's not like that's a magic number that solves all your problems in a way that 86k doesn't.

Hi all - Appreciate the replies. Did some reflecting and realized that I had some kind of FIRE mental block and the $100k is indeed an artificial goal I set for myself. Spain trip will set me back $2k and will not affect my finances negatively. Thank you <3

You've been planning this trip for a while I am assuming. It will likely run you 6 to 12k I'm guessing. This isn't going to put you behind in the long game... you gotta invest in yourself and your happiness in addition to your FIRE goals.

Take your trip, you might croak tomorrow.

This is why no one in this bowl can actually fire 🤣

I accidentally deleted my lengthy reply 😭.

Anyways the main point I was making is that if your new worth consists of investments, then that alone shows why that type of goal is silly to begin with. Market is volatile. You can set better goals such as the amount to save each year to hit your target using the 4% rule.

Go and take your vacation

likeuplifting

Take the trip- you'll appreciate the memories! What is saving the money for if not to enjoy (within reason, which your trip falls under)

likeuplifting

Always take the trip. Saving is great and all but we are not guaranteed our futures.

Where are you planning to go within Spain?

likeuplifting

Consider the south of Spain as well. Granada was one of my all time favorite destinations.

go on that trip! we are here for a good time not a long time

Although you aren’t at $100k NW yet, it’s clear that you made some conscious changes to try and improve your financial independence, and have seen success with that growth. Maybe you can use this trip as a “reward” for making those changes and taking the focus on your finances seriously.

I think a big part of the FiRE movement is around being able to spend time away from the “rat race” and enjoying life, and a trip to Spain sounds like it aligns to that goal. I’m a big fan of disconnecting and relaxing frequently to help recharge the batteries!

I had the same mentality for a long time - after a lot of self reflection and talking to a therapist about my financial worries, I started to let it go. I am many years ahead of you in my career and was aiming hard to hit 500k net worth last year - I fell short but I enjoyed the reasons why (vacation, new house etc). You have to live life

I wouldn’t take the trip. You’re already behind. Lmao just kidding. Please take the trip. You’ve created an artificial number for yourself and putting unneeded stress on yourself. That 2k won’t set you back and you will feel so good after the trip. If anything, just slow down on your spending before and after the trip if that gives you peace of mind. Save travels and enjoy!

Take the trip!

If it helps you feel better about it, maybe you could try to reduce spending elsewhere before & following to trip, to reviup 2k?
Maybe cut cable costs X months, or eat in X times?

Hmm yes… currently running relatively lean already but I’m expecting the healthcare costs I incurred at the end of last year to be pretty much done and that should relieve some stress

Joking aside, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Do what you can, enjoy what you can. I’m negative $180k between my SO and I because we have a lot of student loan debt. We’re taking it a day at a time and know that worrying won’t get us anywhere and we have to enjoy our youth while we can. Take that trip and enjoy some of the results of your labor OP

Do it on a budget

Though all of the search engines provide listings, hoping that y’all know a better means, or better, yet, word of mouth of such positions. I am on the border of MD, PA & DE so any are acceptable

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.
