My husband is getting out of the military to continue his masters in cyber security. He has a bachelor degree is in Strategic intelligence. He would like to work for a consulting firm in cyber or Intel. But most jobs are asking for 2+ years of experience which he doesn’t have at this time but, he has amazing analytical, writing and communication skills. what’s your advice for him? if anyone is able to help him land his first position in the DC area, please PM me.

Count the military time as work experience

likesmart

Yes I have non cyber military and count those years to overall experience to get past hr screens. Granted I do also have cyber experience, so just padding my stats

We do a lot of vet hiring at Accenture, plenty ex intel/law/military in our security practice especially. ACN has federal and commercial offices in DC. I’m in DC in security (commercial) myself. We have a dedicated cyber security center here in Rosslyn focused on cyber defense, which is right up his alley. Our cyber defense practice lead is ex-mil himself. DM me if he’s interested, can make a referral.

Thank you! That’s exactly what he would like to do. I’ll PM you.

TAPS should answer all of these questions for him. His military experience counts as experience. If he wants to work in the IC he needs to stay Public Sector. He needs to work the military avenue and connections and he will be fine. Find him a vet that can help bridge the gap for him.

Great advice!! Thank you!

why not go work for intel or DOJ? cyber warfare using disinformation will be a massive problem to tackle next 4 years, should be lots of opportunity to slide over with limited background and build degree / creds.

If he came out with a clearance this will be no concern to get a job.

like

Yes he has a clearance

If he has a clearance tell him to get his Security+ and he should be good to go. Most Government contracts require having at least one security certification and the Security+ is the easiest/cheapest one to get that qualifies for most roles

Check out Fireeye Mandiant. Big office in the DC area and they do a lot of intel work and are very favorable towards veterans

I was reached out to about a role that I was interested in pursuing but the recruiter said their base was 30k-40k lower than my range. In the mean time within those 2 weeks, I ended up accepting a role and started the new job. I would have taken the first job but don’t want to renege.
