Where does something like operating revenue come in?
(Cont) for a company. You pitch that single project to them. It kills it because of course it did, it’s a self selected project. Like student work. Then you do it again for a totally different company. Eventually companies take you seriously when you say you have something for them because if you have something they known it will be good.
Even if your work for them is amazing, you refuse to retain them as an AOR client. That’s not your style.
If you invite an account person or two into your hairbrained scheme, maybe it won’t be so well.. hairbrained.
OP - it’s a good idea but like VP1 was saying, it will be tricky to ensure you have the revenue coming in to keep it alive and keep your peeps paid so they can stay with you and make it happen. That said, if you can make this happen it will be awesome, and I’m rooting for you. Just be ready; it’s gonna be brutal, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
If you don’t have account people you’ll need really strong client relationships from your creative and strat people, otherwise you’ll never get a foot in the door. Interesting business model though, more like a consultancy than an agency.
There would be someone in an account-like role, but it would have to be slightly different because we wouldn’t be looking to build long term relationships with clients.
Account people aside, the biggest issue with the business model would be operating cost vs revenue.... You simply can’t afford to be paying people’s wages on company cash while hoping / gambling that a client pay-check will “come through” via a project win. It’s hard enough for agencies to stay afloat and keep the lights on when every single hour of labor IS being paid for in advance by a client. Some agencies can barely survive doing this as a one-off for a pitch...
