I would think they would just have you overnight it to them (on their dime). Can you work remotely from a personal computer via Citrix or something similar in the meantime? Maybe they should just be overnighting you a new one too?
Can you remote in from a personal device?

Tell your partners and seniors that you’re losing at least one day of work because the laptop they gave you stopped working and IT ‘a only solution is to bring it to them. They should be able to FedEx a loaner to you instead. Maybe the partners can help.
It’d also be “cheaper” to have IT drive to YOU versus you spending billable time in your car for 300 miles.
Lazy internet post. I meant “time otherwise spent billing”.
I wouldn’t sweat it and it’s not your fault, but you do have to let them know. Stuff happens and tech stuff is clearly not your fault. They’ll probably concerned it will happen to them.
Been a long time since I’ve worked at a firm, and apologies if you’ve already done/thought of these things, but I would: (1) let the partner know what is happening and (2) if they can’t get another laptop to you tout de suite, go buy a temp one (I believe you only have the 1 laptop with you atm). You can get a decent one for a few hundo these days. If I were a partner I would prefer you didn’t spend time driving the laptop in to the firm.
Why can’t you overnight it to IT on the firm’s dime and work via virtual desktop?
If you’re a good biller and value to the firm I’d say just go buy a new one and we’ll reimburse you. Maybe that’s not possible if firm IT needs to load security software etc. in that case I’d say to have IT do it and overnight it to you. Seriously we have those capabilities so why not
They should courier you a new laptop. I got one in three hours in a ski cabin in Vermont.
Partner won't be pissed if your billables don't fall off a cliff.
Worst comes to worst you work a weekend to make it up.
But it seems like the smarter thing would be to overnight it to the nearest office and use VPN/citrix on your personal laptop or a friend's/wife's/etc laptop until they fix it and send it back.
Um FedEx?
