My law school colleague at a Big Law firm told me he sent my resume to the firm’s recruitment team with his personal recommendation. It has been about two weeks since I gave him my resume, and I have not heard anything. How soon should I follow up? And with whom?

I would have also applied to the position with a cover letter and through the firm website / portal. I’ve recommend two people and each time had them do this simultaneously so that the firm has all the details and knows the person is definitely interested. So ask if you should apply formally, assuming it’s an open listed position.

Good point!

just text him and ask what’s up

Follow up and as your colleague. They may not really be hiring, only collecting resumes for when business picks up again.

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send. There’s also so much about closing that I don’t understand and I feel like I’m bothering the higher-ups on the team whenever I ask. *end anxiety post*

So, I'm happy at my current job and have been there about 18 months. Our pay is probably 15% below market (AmLaw 100) but so are our billable requirements. An interview for another firm kind of fell into my lap, and I'm debating whether to take it just for the sake of seeing what market really is. Is there something shady about interviewing somewhere you're not totally committed to accepting an offer from?

I've been noticing a new trend in biglaw passive aggressiveness: Adding a question mark to a non-question when you're following up on something. E.g., "Hi X, just wanted to check in on Y as the client would like to see a draft as soon as possible? When can we expect this?"

And to the people who do this... why?

the main partner I work for hasn’t been giving me consistent enough work (or type I want) so while I work for him still on some deals, I’ve had to go and get other work from other partners. He doesn’t regularly check in on what I’m working on. He keeps volunteering me for projects without checking if I have capacity and if he expected to know everything I’m working on… he would’ve thought I was just doing nothing the last 2 months. I don’t know how to address this workload balancing with him!

Does anyone else feel like the term “manage up” has been twisted from meaning “try to set expectations for your availability and process” to “do both your job AND the partners job?” So many partners just ignore email requests and pings until everything is last minute or on fire. When I mention this in any sort of review “manage up” is normally what I hear back, in some form or another.
