It’s not good for your career in this industry to only be tied to one person. Think of our firms as giant fraternities - when it comes to managing your brand and promotion ability, you want several sponsors. Not too many, because that could introduce too many opinions.
So I’d say, if you stay with this person, then you need to make sure you’re developing relationships with others.
That said, at the end of the day, if he doesn’t allow you the opportunity to do so, then he is not your sponsor and this arrangement is not a good one for you career-wise.

Now that I’ve gotten the fun part out of the way:
A) I would have a frank conversation with them, about what the other type of work you’d like to do. Sit with them to chalk a plan on how you can make it happen in the next few months etc. without hanging them out to dry.
B) ideally no - it is fairly normal to switch things up. I mean that’s why you took consulting up. You have to have a professional way to get through it though, and have thought about a clear path forward. You can’t say “I don’t like working with you .. etc”. You’ve got to say, “I’d like to do more of .... and ... this is how I think it fits into the next 2-5 years of my career”
C) if you are working on topics you truly enjoy and are learning from, then it will pay off, in terms of exit opportunities. However, cannibalizing your networking opportunities within the firm, won’t help you grow within the firm
D) My advice is to get away from the principal as soon as possible; and make the break up as smooth as possible even if it takes a few weeks to work itself out.
(e.g weekends), but I feel he’s ‘reserving’ me with me having almost no other visibility at other managers. Also, somehow it doesn’t pay off - no salary increases or promotions.
A) Was someone of you in a similar situation? If yes, how did you handle it?
B) Will I burn any bridges if i give pushback? How do Ms/SMs/Ps/VPs see this?
C) How will walking the extra miles pay off in the mid- and long-term?
D) Any other advise or experience?

Ask your staffing to put you on a different project with different personnel..
He’s my line superior, not my project manager. So switching projects doesn’t make sense.
