My manager said I spend 12 hours a day at work. I am using that time to learn the process and produce better work than before. But they said it looks like I am inefficient.

The funny thing is if you didn’t take time to research guidance and materials to expand your knowledge your snapshot would probably say “I recommend (Name) takes the time to research the applicable guidance and regulations and read through tailored procedures to expand his/her knowledge on the areas he/she is working on” So if you don’t take that time to learn you get criticized, but if you do you still get criticized. I was an associate and my senior from my busy season left me that remark on my Snapshot. I asked her “So hypothetically if you told me to work on an EGA on this busy season engagement, where we are already working 70+ hours a week, and after an hour you decided to check in with me on the status of that EGA and I told you “I haven’t started it yet because I was reading the audit guide and tailored procedures to get an understanding over the testing”, what would your response be?” She replied “I would say you can’t waste time doing that you just need to get it done” So I basically told her it was a BS comment on my snapshot because realistically she was telling me I should have done something she wouldn’t have actually wanted me to do. So my advice - get the stuff done quickly for the team, and if you want to do further research do it from home offline and your team won’t know so they wouldn’t be able to say anything.

Unfortunately efficiency is important. Make sure you’re not falling behind on the work that has to go through various levels of review.

like

I agree with your manager. Especially if you are charging that processing time to the client

like

There is nothing wrong about digging and learning about your client and auditing in general. I think it is reasonable to take an extra half hour for tasks to make sure you fully comprehend everything. Hopefully your senior explains things and don’t just say rollforward from prior year. The only way you will catch an error is if you understand the process.

All this being said if your told to do a mindless task like clerically testing a bunch of schedules just grind down and get it done

i think they're just checking in and want to see if they can help you out in any way. is there anything you're finding more difficult?

@ey1 I wish that was the case. I explained I liked working a little longer because it took pressure of gave me time to research and learn what I am doing. The responce I got was to not waste time because I could be doing other things

@ey2 I'm not. I only charge my productive time

I would recommend saving the deep dive research areas for EOW, if possible. Management's purpose is to review and catch errors. The learning is important, but things should get turned quickly.

Do you record your unbillable time? I have had conflicting responses. I have been told it's not good for efficiency calculations but others have told me if your still doing work let people know. For example, I get weird international stuff sometimes that not everyone gets (I think maybe? ) and I need to reread the 5471 rules or 8865 rules as I do the returns. I have been told not to bill for this but if I didn't have to spend time to do such things my billable hours would be higher
