I’d try not think of it as “letting people take advantage of her” and “refusing to acknowledge the problem.” She sounds like some parents I used to work with in child welfare. Bear with me, but the org I worked with did group therapy sessions for parents who had made poor decisions and put their kids in harms way or otherwise had a reason to be involved with CPS. I know it’s a super specific example, but a lot of these adults just didn’t have the capacity (due to their own upbringing and life experiences) to weigh decisions the same way you and I do. They’d make poor decisions over and over, despite wanting to change. They’d pick partners who treated them like crap, they’d let people who’d wronged them back in, they’d fail to stand up for themselves or their kids. From the outside, it looks like self destructive behavior and objectively bad decision-making, but from their perspective it’s survival and getting by. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this in your mother, and it’s frustrating but we only know our parents as adults, not their lives before us. I’d try and be patient and do everything in your power to get your mom into therapy.

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?

Do all therapists use the line, “I’m not taking any new patients at this time.” When they don’t want to see someone?! I found someone who would be perfect and got that line. Seems like I’ve gotten that line every time I’ve reached out to a counselor… has anyone successfully gotten past that barrier? Do they not want to take on someone who has insurance and would rather get the full bill rate in cash?

Alright moms. 4th kid in daycare and this one just won’t nap. We send a portable white noise machine and she has a lovey. But she apparently has serious FOMO. I’ve asked them to move her to the furthest corner. Then moved her to the younger baby room. But I’m out of ideas. 11 months old (10 mo adjusted). I had chalked it up to just starting at daycare but we are almost 2 months in. She’s a hot mess in the evenings. What magic do you have for me. All of my others fell in a routine by now!

I’m terrified of pregnancy but not of motherhood (except for the noise, kids are so loud). Pregnancy/breastfeeding looks horrible to me, but I’d feel bad about missing out on kids because I was scared of something that wasn’t so bad. It doesn’t help that I don’t know a single pregnant person—in my 30s and none of my friends have children! Any moms out there who can speak about what it’s actually like?

Does anybody have a view on the growth path / trajectory for a Strategy and Ops Lead at Google? I didn't get a very clear sense in my interviews, esp. because it feels like there is 1 manager for the team and so there is not a lot of scope for organic upward movement. Is it only through lateral moves within the org? You get enough tenure for the next role then find an opp to switch?

I just got an offer for a part time internship. Combines both my current job skills (I don’t like my current job) and my passion. I want to take this and quit my current position, and it feels like a great transition position, but am a bit nervous to do so. However, I’ve been getting interviews recently and have enough savings for a few months if need be. Any advice or thoughts appreciated! 🙏
