My net worth has increased from $0 to $557k in 4.5 years. This year, I saved & invested $130k. $58k of the $557k is an inheritance, but the rest is self-earned. Ask me anything.

My goal for next year is to put away $100k, and I was feeling some self doubt but definitely feeling inspired by this post!

Cheap Rent and not eating out a lot. Also don’t own a car

Am really impressed by your savings standard and that your SO is on the same wavelength financially. Do you have a car or any transportation expense? However, have you considered RE as part of your cashflow investment portfolio? This will definitely increase your path to financial independence faster.

I currently work in the UK as an ex-pat so the properties are located in LCOL areas in the UK(Northern England and Scotland). For the first property, I paid a 10% deposit and for subsequent properties, I paid a 25% deposit. I have a rental agency that ensures that the tenant issues are sorted out.
For the United States, I heard that it is a lot easier for a first-time buyer to put a 3% deposit for an FHA mortgage which will enable the purchase of a quadplex multi-family home. I am not an expert in that area, I have learnt from a number of experts in the US who kept me updated on how things work there. As I also considering expanding my portfolio to the US.

I’ve jumped companies once, have always been a very top performer (as indicated by annual bonus), and have brought an outside offer once to get a raise. This led to an increase in salary and retention bonus.

You are everything I am not! I was a spender. Dang… good for you!!!

Did you just put $130k into the market? I plan to start pouring money into the market but it feels weird transferring all my money somewhere…I guess it will be safe with Schwab for a 21 year hold, right?

I put 130k in the market this year across the year. I invest every paycheck.

Nobody knows but I believe a typical FIRE portfolio will grow within a 20 year timespan.

In a MCOL. Savings / pre tax TC is 81%

Do you spend any money for "fun"? Vacation, nice dinner out and etc. Do you budget for those?

Due to Covid I think we’ve been having/doing less fun. So this year I only went on one vacation and it was a cheapish road trip. Total cost was less than 1k. I expect after Covid with international travel I’ll need to budget 3k or so for an international trip and that’ll cut into savings a bit.

As far as eating out for a nice dinner, my SO and I don’t find that super enjoyable bc she travels for work so is always eating out. We cook really nice and new meals at home on the weekends.

Other fun things we do are watch a lot of TV, play board games, and drink at a friends place or host friends ourselves.

What do you invest in (blue chips, tech, ETFs, index funds..) ? Which broker do you use ?

Solid portfolio OP. I’d look into the “Weird Portfolio”. Very similar but Includes some Gold and uses VGLT instead. Weird Portoflio also recommends using small caps (VSS and VBR), but I think VTI/VXUS is a healthy substitute. Great work and research.

What funds do you choose for your mega backdoor roth (if you do have it)?

Yes I have it for up to 15k. I transfer it to my Roth IRA and then follow my general portfolio allocation.

10% MTUM
50% VTI
20% VXUS
10% VNQ
10% EDV

(Taking into account tax efficiency of funds)

How do you track your net worth?

How old are you?

Traditional

How many years of experience do you have? Is 4.5 all of it?

Damn I graduated at the same time in India and now completing my masters at 24. Feel really behind 😞

Nearly identical numbers on my end - but started at -$150k and did it in 4.25 years. Let’s keep it goin

Early 40s. No debt. Currently have ~50yrs worth of [annual expenses+15%] between savings, investments and 401k (not including future social security). Current savings ~1.5yrs [expenses+15%], 401k ~12yrs [expenses+15%], and investments ~37yrs [expenses+15%]

At what point would early retirement be a serious consideration for you, given no interest in increasing expenses (other than inflation) or any other substantial changes, with satisfaction in life outside work?

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.

Weighing up a top buy-side offer, but worried about perception on my overall tenure within roles.

May only be in this new ASC role for ~1y (personal circumstances). This would make 3 roles in ~3.5 years ( T2 consulting -> MBB -> buyside) out of undergrad. Long-term want to be entrepreneurial / do early-stage investing (Partner-track at a fund), have clear rationale for previous and future moves.

Is this an issue or am I overthinking? Thoughts?
