My parents have always said put the most amount into your 401k but I only put around 8-9%. I currently have 223k in it at 35. I would put more but I have been investing that money in the market to hopefully use in the next couple of years. Any advice on what is a good percentage. I'm sure most will tell me to max out.

The reason to max it is that you save on taxes since it reduces your AGI. Taxes feel like such a waste to me so I try to lower my AGI as much as I can!

If you need money in the near future, it is probably best to not have it in the 401k. Other than an emergency fund and money for near term needs, I would put everything in 401k/IRA/HSA before I invested in a taxable account.

You need to make sure you are comfortable with that and flexible on purchase timing. You would need a contingency if the market has dropped when you want to buy a house.

Make sure you have a good 401K. Mine was charging exorbitant fees like 14% in fees with ADP so I switched. Pretty irritated at ADP.

Yeah this is not true, no retirement plan in the world could get away with charging anything near that

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?

Consultant means senior level??

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
