my partner always says you have to to reach out for work everyday when available and blames low utilization on the staff level when we have a dedicated resource manager. Is this industry standard?

Better to take initiative for your career by building a brand of dependable excellence and a loyal stable of leaders that see you as a major asset on projects. If demand managers are deciding your fate, you’re not doing what I outlined in the previous sentence. Long term, this business is about building and growing relationships, not waiting for a demand manager to give you a place in line. I’d cut yourself some slack for the first few months, but if your a year into the job, you should be coming after opportunities like a spider 🐒 and building a rep as a strong asset and not someone who waits to be told what to do. At least at my firm, demand management is largely clerical, keeping track of who’s staffed. Project leadership will always pick their favorites that fit for a role. DM only influences when there isn’t an obvious choice. Here’s another way to look at it. If the partners you work with aren’t selling work, and you’d like to be billable, then what variables in this equation can you solve to become billable?

McK1, i have the same problem. I used to be proactive in reaching out, at my previous firm, with some luck, but the new place I'm at is very political, so if you reach out to partners outside of your "tribe", you risk being staffed by them when your most important promoters in the firm need you, which may ironically backfire on you... (I literally got caught in the cross fire the second week of employment and have been reluctant to network since).

No. Usually it's just the resource manager who handles this.

like

Kind of. When it's your first year the blame is taken off you but after, you're on your own

like

Blaming you for things out of your control is definitely an industry standard, yes. Consultants love to shirk accountability and push it downward

like

You can’t control anything, If partner did not sell enough work and due to budget you can’t be staffed on travel projects. Have see many people get canned for this reason in PwC

like

P1 why aren't you selling? Why is the bench deep?

like

80% of my projects over the 4 years I've been here are the result of networking. That being said, it should not be that way, otherwise why pay for RMs? Your partner is essentially shit testing you. The issue is however, that you cannot win this battle. My advice is always to be honest with yourself and be confident in your position, but avoid engaging in battles that you can't win. Sucks homie, but brush it off and drive on!

like

OP, why are you wasting time posting this instead of reaching out to someone to find productive work? Do we need to have a 1:1 discussion about your utilization?

like

Sounds like all KPMG with the self staff mentality

like

All but my 1st project was self staffing. Network and reach out to people. I’ve never once been unhappy with my project or work because of it. It’s your career, if you don’t take control of it you’ll always just be moved around where ever a resource manager puts you who doesn’t really know your skills or if the project is a good fit

like

Manager will try to find you projects but to keep you chargeable, not something you're interested in

1) yes this is common at other firms too. 2) yes you should be finding ways for yourself to be productive while on the bench, either in finding a new engagement or taking training or helping with proposals or whatever. 3) it's in your best interest to be networking for your next engagement anyway so that you get work that you're really interested in

It's all f'd up here as well EY

like

P1 what's your practice? Can I join? I am not in Risk & Reg, but another ailing new-dangled area.

like

Nothing nefarious, just saying that sometimes your skills are either wanted or hoarded by certain senior people/practices, so beach time is more strategic waiting than reason to worry. I recognize this is generally more of an MBB thing where utilization isn't as important of a metric

OP. Stop trying to understand the matrix. You are just a battery being used up. When your charge is done, you are recycled and fed to new members.
