My partner want to have a second child while I am okay with our toddler boy. It’s expensive to raise kids nowadays on top of demanding corporate jobs.

For those who grew up as the only child, do you wish you had a sibling with whom you can do life, travel, play etc … ?

Grew up with an older brother (8 yrs older than me). Teen yrs and college felt like I was on my own for most part since bro moved out. So yea kinda wish I grew up with someone closer to my age.

like

same - I was last one in the house from 13 on, and always wondered what it would be like to have a peer sibling

like

Yes as an only child it was very lonely as a little kid and I always wanted a sibling. Even now it’s sad that I don’t have that person who’s known me my entire life.

like

I will say, the nice part of having a sibling will come when you get older. My sister is a big support in my life and my parents' lives. It is nice to have someone you can talk to, you can share the family dynamics, is nice to have nieces and nephews. Your siblings indeed can be your best friends.

like

Nobody likes only children. Yea I said it. You should have another one.

Y'all are only saying have more because you like your siblings and/or your kids like each other. There's no guarantee your kids will get along if you have more than one.

like

Only child but never felt lonely - my parents spent plenty of time taking me out for travelling etc.

I did want a dog though, but not siblings!

I grew up an only child and I can say its lonely. I see my boyfriend catching up with his siblings as an adult and the great relationship they have and I kinda wish I had someone like that in my life

like

It’s more than just growing up with no siblings. We will all get old and die. Our child’s siblings are their ultimate connection to their history and past when that time comes.
On top of that, you learn so much in life from having siblings and hopefully have lots of fun too.
I have a little baby and I’m definitely going for more. I can’t imagine my life without my sister.

like

We have 3 and I cant imagine if it was just one of them. They have so much fun and entertain each other, talk about their school friends, sleep in same room and talking stories. But I see your point as well. If both of you have demanding corporate jobs it’ll be a struggle but doable. Both just have to be on same page to make it work.

like

Unless if there are medical reasons, I always think it’s best to pair up the kids so they can get someone to share experiences and life with early on.

As D1 said—just need to be on the same page.

I (F) have an older brother (2 years older than me). We fought occasionally growing up and even sometimes now as adults but know that we have each other’s back. Also we’re in similar stages in life due to the closeness in age so we talk about dating, career, and family things all the time!

likefunny

Only child- didn’t mind it as a kid and didn’t feel lonely. Now that I’m older I really wish I had a sibling. Built in friend for life who understands you and you’re there for each other.

like

Only child - parents traveled in the summer as they taught school. At times it was weird as the only kid in adult situations but I learned to make friends. My friends has siblings but we’re closer to each other. I have 3 kids and see the dynamic. Hard part is I don’t have anyone to share the load as my parents get older, my wife is wonderful but could use a partner.

like

I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t grow up without older siblings

like

I am one of 4, but my SO only has one and it’s so sad. If that sibling is busy with his in laws, it leaves just us and it’s lonely and sad for our kids that they don’t have many cousins on that side. I love having multiple siblings

like

I’m one of five. Growing up, I thought I wanted to be an only child. We fought and yelled at each other a lot more than we were friendly. As an adult, they are my best friends. It’s so nice to have someone to call and make fun of each other. My husband has a sibling 4 years younger that he didn’t really grow up with. He’s always telling me how he wishes he had more siblings.

like

I have only wanted an older sister when I was maybe 5-7 and since that’s not possible, never wanted a sibling. My mom stayed home so she ended up being a babysitter of several kids over the years while I was younger, mostly boys. This further reiterated that I didn’t want a brother because they were loud, messy, destructive, etc.

I never felt lonely growing up because of the babysitting my mom did and when I was in elementary school there were cousins nearby.

While I do not have kids, I know the more you have the more it cost. No two are alike, even if raised in same household so you will have to figure out the best way to raise them as individuals. I’d think that could be a lot since you can’t predict if they will get along or maybe one needs a lot more attention which could have you neglect the other because they are more “independent.”

I like to think I’m well adjusted and adaptable. I’m ok being alone and have always been able to entertain myself. I never had an issue sharing but I took great care of my things so if another kid was always breaking their own things then I wasn’t taking that risk.

The only thing about being an only child that could be a negative is when my parents get older I will be the only one to care for them, should they need it. But I have also seen folks with siblings have to do all the caring as well so it is what it is. I know for some only children get a bad rep but I think it depends on how your raise the child.

uplifting

I have 3 siblings and I love it. My sisters my bestie. And I’m super close to my brothers too. (I swear I have other friends too haha) I’m the youngest so I guess just close to everyone. But yeah we love having a big family.
I really struggle with the idea of having another child too because it’s SOO DIFFICULT but I know it will be worth it for my baby. Cousins or friends just aren’t the same

But there's one thing that's been bothering me: it's hard to get feedback on my work when I'm not in the office. It would be great if there was some kind of system that let me know how my performance was being evaluated while I'm working on projects from home.
