My place of work recently shared a document with a list of people within the district who have been promoted to other locations, detailing their full name and job title.

The document also included each employees gender and race for all to see. Is this legal? It seems unnecessary to tell others that “a white male promoted to ___ position” or whatever the situation might be.

Any insight?

Looks like an oversight (hopefully). Someone might’ve published a snapshot of the employee census or like HR data outputs without taking out two of the columns. At the end of the day the data is tracked for many reasons.
It could also be somebody over reaching to show look how diverse our promotion class is… and that’s not the way

like

Supposedly the intended reason for sharing the document is to highlight employees moving up - which is great! But again, I find it unnecessary to know any other identifying markers such as their race/gender. I was under the impression that certain details were protected by privacy laws.

My reason for having an issue with this is the fact that IMO sharing this information opens the door for discrimination.

I get that it's weird and off-putting. But hard to see any actual or intended malice from this.

It may depend on where you’re based, but that’s information that every HR department I’ve worked in treats as confidential (race, gender, age, etc.). Sharing who’s been promoted is fine, but if they wanted to share demographic data is should have been done as an aggregate, not tied to each individual.

like

^this I would have done two things if trying to show promotions. A summary table of promotions across the attributes - % of women, % of non-white, etc. - then a roster without the individual demographic specifics

like

Probably an attempt at showing diversity within the promotions?
An ull advised attempt in my opinion, but that would be my guess.

Perhaps an oversight, or it could be intentional. I recently listened in a podcast where a company shares all their employees role and salary along their names, including their executives, in a way to increase visibility at all levels. Sounds like a good intention with questionable execution, but it has been received well by the employees. So who knows, maybe that's one way your firm is exploring new ways to increase visibility as well.

It's worth asking. Depending on where you are based, it could be considered a personal data breach, particularly related to characteristics

Not an HR specialist but this seems very … odd

In the UK that’s illegal. May not be the right word but that information is ‘protected’ so cannot be used without your permission.

Many thanks.

One of my friends only talks about their SO in conversations. She's done this since they started dating three years ago. She steers the conversation to talk about random stuff he does that's not even interesting and our friends have no clue what's going on with her life, because we only hear about the guy. It's literally stuff like "Adam just got some coffee but was too tired to drink it so he's been watching tv for an hr." How do we ask her to stop? I usually just ignore the stories.

So I have a friend who likes to say “you don’t get your dream job, you make it” in response to my dissatisfaction with my job. I think i understand her intent but it never sat well with me. Today it finally hit me that, while it’s meant to be motivational in a “you are responsible for your own happiness” kind of way, it’s a little gaslighty as if positive thinking alone can change a toxic culture. Thoughts?
