My potential roommate is a foreigner and I’m afraid living with her may impact my clearance (DHS public trust). The potential roommate works at an embassy of an ally country. Should I not?

For a DHS pub trust? You’re fine.

You could have problems for TS and TS/SCI if that’s a goal for you later on, depending on how close you are and what connections your roommate has to foreign organizations. Public trust is super lax though (if it’s low risk, high risk ones are equivalent to TS), all they want to know is that you’re not a criminal, at risk of manipulation, or closely tied to a foreign government.

Totally disagree

That’s totally fine. Clearance investigations don’t care about cohabitation or foreign contacts in itself — they care about disclosure and potential risk of being influenced. Also it’s a public trust... which is the most lax of the clearances. I know people with dozens of “close” foreign contacts at got TS.

like

Totally fine is a stretch. I echo D4

Ask your security office for guidance... as you can tell random folks on the internet have mixed views. :)

It’s all in how you read the term “cohabitate”. Most interpretations are steady relationship - not roommates.

like

Depends on the agency. Definitely ask your CSO

It’s just a public trust, more than fine.

like

Got both a Public Trust and a Secret clearance with a foreign wife...you should be fine

like

It will slow it down the investigation process for sure. If you already have the clearance make sure you report the contact to your security manager

likefunny

So cohabitation (esp. romantic cohabitation) can affect high level clearances — not that you’d be denied one solely based on the fact that you’re cohabitating with a foreign national, but there’s a lot more hoops to jump through.

That being said, a public trust is not a clearance — so you’re fine.

like

Save yourself the hassle and don’t do it. Trust me, I had the same issue from undergrad and it still comes up years later during security clearance interviews.

like

Everyone on here who is saying “it can impact you” is talking much more about TS. I’ve had DHS public trust and i don’t think they even asked about my roommates. (Maybe they did but if so it was a non issue). I was also cohabitation w foreign nationals at the time and it was no issue. I wouldn’t stress about this too much esp w public trust

likehelpful

I agree with D5. Who knows what clearance you’ll need in the future and those reinvestigations/eQIPs make you write down all your roommates from previous residences so your potential roommate might become this annoying hurdle when it comes to your future clearance investigations.

like

You can get denied for that. My friend who was getting a clearance was told he had to find another place to live because his roommate was a foreigner, even as a permanent resident... from Canada. If it’s public trust high risk then you definitely need to reconsider

Public trust you’re fine. If you worked in the IC run.

No. I've had a TS SCI full scope poly with an au pair (foreign nanny). We had au pairs for 7 years, my husband and I had no problems maintaining our clearances. Just report the relationship if required.

Live your life! There's ex convicts with Top Secret clearances!!
Just declare everything to your sf86 and your investigators. Be honest.
Melania Trump got her Top Secret DOD clearance in two weeks. There is ZERO transparency and ZERO accountability in this process.
An adjudicator told me she denied a clearance to a man because he would have looked better in a red shirt...lol.
Live your life. Be honest with the process.
