My relationship ended this weekend. I am devastated at the moment and could really use a day or two away from work to grieve and start to recover. Unfortunately I cannot do so today. Any encouragement on how to get through this work day/week would be much appreciated :)

Just happened to me. Take it hour by hour and please plan to take a day off this week. Cry if you need to and maybe plan to get fresh air

Dang, I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through the same thing. I appreciate the encouragement to take time off. It can be hard to do in this job.

Confide in a colleague you trust as to your situation; depending on your current working situation (either WFH or in the office) go for a short 10-15 min walk to “reset”; get lunch with colleagues to distract yourself. Unfortunately this will be a tough week and I’m sorry to hear.

Thank you so much for these kind words! Fortunately I can WFH most of this week. The weather is great, so I’ll try to follow your advice to take a walk today.

Same thing happened to me about 10 days ago. It has been touch and go for me. I confided in some colleagues and even some partners I work with. They encouraged me to WFH

It’s rough! A friend sent me flowers to my office, which was an amazingly nice gesture but then I melted down and my firm knew something was up. Thankfully I was met with so much love and support and telling people actually helped me. We are all humans and life happens. After a week and a half I’m doing better! You will be doing better soon too.

Just wanted to say I’m so sorry and you will get through this tough time. Take it one day at a time and if necessary one hour at a time. This will pass ❤️

I’m so sorry.. Honestly, work may be a good distraction for you, it was for me. My best advice is to stay busy. While at work, try your best to get through the day. If you need a minute, take a minute. Take a walk, go outside if you need to cry, and try to stay off social media.. i found social media really triggering. Make plans with friends for after work. Schedule phone calls with other people if you don’t have plans for after work. Hang in there, sending good thoughts 🤍

Pickup or download audio version of Getting Past Your Breakup by Susan D. Elliott...even just the first chapter or two totally changed my perspective and helped me push forward days after a recent break-up. It should be required reading. Hang in there.

Thanks all for your kind words and encouragement! I got through the first/toughest day and even billed an acceptable amount. Hopefully each day gets better from here :)

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".

Co-Founder here. I have 25% of the company, and the other 2 cofounders have 10% and 65%. The 10% cofounder hardly does anything anymore. The 65% co-founder still seems dedicated and I think it’s largely because of sunk costs (this person put in most of the money). I don’t believe in the startup anymore, which seems to be a good indication it’s time to quit. Any advice for quitting and leaving your company in an even worse state as a result? Thanks 🙏

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.

What are various firms doing to assist/support working parents with the new school year, which at least in New York, contains part-time in the building & part-time virtually? In the spring, virtual learning seemed temporary, so we all managed. Now that it's more permanent, I'm not sure how I will manage long-term. I will likely have to drop to part-time - a decision I suspect will impact vastly more mothers than fathers.

This post is part rant/part request for advice. I am a relatively new partner (title on this app has not updated yet) in a male dominated practice. I am only the second woman partner in my practice at my firm, ever, and it has been around for a while. Having dealt with various issues navigating my way towards partnership, I’m very involved in mentoring younger attorneys and particularly women. I recently heard that a young woman associate in my practice group told others I am not (cont.)

I joined a new firm October 1 & billed a 200 hour month. With my current workload, I am expecting to meet or exceed my prorated hours target. When I accepted the position, future bonuses were discussed, but given ramp up, etc. I didn’t think to ask about a prorated bonus for my stump year. Has anyone dealt with this before? I hate to ask & sound greedy, but I relocated (at a pay cut) for this position & a bonus would really help going to my mortgage payments I’m still carrying for my old condo.

Anyone else obsess over your next career move? I’m a senior associate in a niche BigLaw group in DC. I am just now hitting my stride and can really see a path to partnership. I handle my own matters relatively independently, am generating some business, and will inherit a large book of business in my favorite space in the next year or so. The problem is that this isn’t what I want, or at least what I think I want. (Continued in comments).

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

I hung out this weekend with a work friend of mine. We’re both junior, but I’ve been on FMLA due to an unexpected illness so have been away for a bit. I know that I screwed up on some files before I was diagnosed which I feel awful about and have been trying to rectify (unpaid), but she spent a lot of time cataloguing the ways in which I messed up. It was supposed to be a nice weekend for once and I’m feeling more beat down than ever 😕 just not sure how to get the motivation/nerve to go back!

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).
