My salary is 95k, 10% in 401k, save $1500 a month, renting, and single. I feel financially middle class despite being at least in the 80th percentile. Seems really hard to achieve the american dream.

You’re saving 1500$ and putting 10% of your income away into retirement. You’re saving close to 40%+ of your salary (guesstimate). If you wanted to splurge you would have some wiggle room to do so.

like

Which makes you not middle class. Home ownership in high col areas is not even in a true middle class persons dream.
If you feel poor because you see extravagance on insta or something, think about it. It’s all fake. You have a significant savings account and a retirement plan. You are firmly upper class.

You're living well within your means. This is smart. Continue to do this, and you will probably be very rich in a few years. Don't waste your money on things you can't afford. Save for a house, then pay off that mortgage.

“I feel financially middle class”😂🤣🤣.

Your feeling don’t change where you fall statistically.

Continued... I feel like I need to make 150k to truly be comfy. How do people that make 50k even get by in life? I'm supposedly fortunate but dont feel that way.

I make around $140k and my SO has a good earning potential as well but honestly it never really feels like enough so I doubt that worry will go away as you climb the income ladder. You will always want more. However not living paycheck to paycheck or really having to worry about money for basic necessities as well as the fun stuff is a great feeling.

Are you in a HCOL area? I feel that has a huge impact. 95K in NYC is very different than 95K in (insert LCOL city)

like

I was super comfortable making 70k, now I make 160k and can do literally whatever I want (single, LCOL)

Not trying to flex at all but the money we make is insane, I’m probably the nicest, most caring person you would ever encounter in your life... most families of 4+ live on 80-100k if not less so complaining about feeling poor isn’t something any of us should do 🤷🏼‍♀️

like

95k as a single person in an HCOL is nothing - i don't think I would feel comfortable until at least 175-200

likefunny

I mean if you are talking about SF then I would agree. But in most other HCOL areas $95k would be fine. In LA you definitely don’t need $175k just to feel comfortable, $95k is plenty. But in SF I am pretty sure the poverty line is like $110k or something absurd.

like

no college debt?

Yeah I'm in a HCOL area.

Paid off my college debt.

This isnt possible in HCOL area. In NYC I use half of my paycheck on rent already.

I pay 900 in a different HCOL area. It's a good deal.

Hi I’m 22 so I would appreciate some help with this. I have to set up my 401k at my first job. They offer 50% match on pre-tax or Roth contributions. I am in California but do not know if I will always be there, so actually kind of torn between doing the pre-tax and Roth option. Any advice? (I haven’t gotten a paycheck so if you know how to check your tax bracket be for you get one let me know)

I need some guidance as to what to do, move my 401k from my last employer over to my current employer, leave it there or take part and put into an IRA with about 20 different stocks, or take part and put into a bond, leave part and move some to somewhere. I don’t know what to do, I just know it’s a bad time to buy right now.

I work in a sucky IBM cic, making $54k. It’s a full time job with regular benefits and vacation etc, it’s working with government clients. The job isn’t what I applied for & constantly changes. I don’t like that, but I’m a full time employee which is “stable employment”. Btw, I’m in the DC area.

I just got hired for a government contract through Accenture for a Business Analyst role. Pay is $65 per hour. 3 year contract. Benefits too. No PTO. Holidays off with pay, after 90 days.

Thoughts?

Ending this belief in our unerring exceptionalism might actually be the thing that saves us. There’s a lot we can learn from the success of other countries (be in healthcare, education, infrastructure investment), but for a long time we turned a blind eye to it because “we are the best”. Countries like Germany, which don’t endlessly praise their own history, have been liberated from the constraints of the past and have been able to make far healthier societies.
