My school is looking for ways to bring together the special education population and the general education population of students. In the past we have done Buddies that would come and visit with the students during our morning meetings. Does anyone e have any other ideas that they would be willing to share?

Inclusion

It would be great to have them eat together one/two days a week. Best buddies is always a great idea.

Unified PE, when done properly, is awesome!

Wow, I read all of the comments and nowhere did I read anyone using Universal Design for Learning to create inclusive campuses. It sounds as we are all creating forced experiences instead of an inclusive environment to begin with. If we began our schools with inclusiveness and NO LABELS, there would be no need to try to bring students together as it would already be a natural and inclusive environment! I am not new to special education as my brother was born with Downs in 1959 and experienced some of the first mandated education for children with (dis)abilities. He was part of the origins of the Special Olympics and I heard doctors call him so many negative words telling my parents to institutionalize him. I've also been a part of Buddies and supported the creation of an inclusive club on the hs campus to allow all students to understand more about (dis)abilities. Having said all of this, I now believe that if we incorporate UDL into all campus environments, inclusion would be naturally built in. FYI, I just completed my EdD in Higher Education focusing on the removal of stigmas and negative language, Universal Design, and understanding ableism. The feedback I received from colleagues (Board and Cabinet members, admin, practitioners, and support services including paras) was awesome. Most had never thought or received instruction on inclusion from their own education. If we truly believe in inclusion, then WE need to set the bar high and not accept crumbs of one time a week togetherness. Promote the use of People First or Identity First Language, and Universal Design for Learning. Create a resolution for board adoption to set the language acceptable (if you need an example, I have several adoptions ready), just send me a request at jgollette@gmail.com and I will share. I truly believe that we are more than practitioners, but we are advocates for our students, families, and the community. If it does not start with us, then who will take the lead?

Google Links peer to peer program. I think that’s a great one

That’s a brilliant idea!
Before bringing General Education and Special Education they need to get teachers helpers and teachers on board first. Games and role plays will serve as ice breakers to give everyone a glimpse of what’s coming.

Prior to COVID restrictions, our special education students ran the school store. They only did it once a week during lunch, and all the kids and staff looked forward to it.

I would suggest the lunch bunch and attending specials together: art, music or physical education. Can the students be including in academic classes?

smart

Have them collaborate once a week.

My school does a club that is called Unified.
Our motto... We choose to include.
This is part of the Special Olympics.

HS activities and clubs. See Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) / High Schools That Work (HSTW) data regarding engagement.

I have assigned each student to a GenEd class for mainstreaming. With that class, they:
- eat lunch
- have recess
- go to PE
- go to music
- participate in SEL lessons/activities
- attend 1 academic content area (an area that is a strength for the student)

#UDL is indeed powerful!
When applied to the online setting, it will also facilitate our transcending space and time.

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

Parents want to send their children back to school not only for educational purposes but also for social interactions. I do understand that many children want that interaction with their friends and teachers. But I don't think it is going to be quite as rewarding as many think with social distancing and face coverings to be safe. No high fives, pats on the back, sharing earbuds to listen to a new song, or consoling an upset friend. Even facial expressions are lost. Tough times.

I am looking to find out what your school does with this type of situation. I have an 18 year old student who should have graduated in 2020, but at this time only has a third of the required graduation credits for my public high school. This student has been an EBD student since 1st grade, has an IQ of 96 and has diagnoses of ADHD and Mood Disorder. This post continues on the first comment due to a character limit in this section.

I went to my GE science teachers and asked for a comprehensive list of what is taught in biology in our GE classes. My goal is to take the main ideas and bring the concepts down to the level of my students to keep them moving at a similar rate. Just wanted to share this with people who would understand. Had 4 IEP meetings last week. When the case manager asked one mother if she had any concerns she said her only concern was that her kindergarten son with autism loved me so much she was afraid of him being promoted and being out of my room. I told her not to worry, in our program I will have him for 2 more years. Boy that made me feel good.
