If the senior can’t help then reach out to the manager to see if they can answer the questions

Sucky situations but your senior is likely overwhelmed too, as is the manager. It happens.

Don’t worry about the deadline, that’s not your responsibility. It will get filed on time, they always do. Plus honestly, your intuition is right. If it was your responsibility, it wouldn’t get out. If you were doing the work, it wouldn’t get out. If your senior had to explain everything to you, it wouldn’t get out. What you need to do is focus on learning stuff. It’s fine to be useless or even a burden as a first year. When they give you a section that you don’t understand just read the workpapers. Then Reread the workpapers. Then reread the workpapers again. Focus on conceptually understanding what that section is doing. Draw it out -whatever helps you. Then, with that understanding do something is one cell correctly. And congratulations! You’ve learned something.

I agree with EY1. In the time this A1 took to re-read something they’ve never seen 3 times, per your recommendation, their senior could’ve explained it to them in less than 10 minutes. And if there’s an issue with the work paper, and it’s taking longer than 10 minutes to explain then obviously there’s an issue here; the task should’ve been given with more context. How is it efficient at all to receive 100 review notes later? Who is benefiting and who is learning? No one. Either you put the time in to develop your associates or you will pay for it later on. It’s easy to chalk it up to “oh these associates just have a bad attitude” This is how you stomp on eager, and willing to learn people that join the firm. This is why all the good people leave.

Your senior might know that the final product won’t be great, but even if you save them an hour or two by trying your best while allowing them to focus on other things instead of them directly preparing it, then it is worth it... There is a point in busy season where there is just no time to adequately coach staff, especially if you just rolled on in the middle of it to help out (probably means things aren’t in great shape), so they should know that it is a rough situation for you and are expecting very little while hoping to get some value.. I would recommend putting 15-30min on their calendar each day and consolidate all of your questions so that you can run through them at one time, and they can give you their focus for at least a little while to point you in the right direction.. you can also leverage more experienced staff on the job to see if they can help answer some things that are client specific, and also use prior year as a guide, and flag things you don’t understand or may have changed but this late in the game PY approach tends not to be questioned if things just need to get done
