My sister just graduated with a doctorate and is interested in being a life sciences consultant. I have not been able to find really good resources to help her. Any suggestions ?.

Thanks fam!

Speaking from experience the transition is not easy but definitely doable. Just having a PhD does not mean someone will be a successful consultant. Many skills, like analytic ability and complex problem solving are big plusses. What is her PhD in? Her expertise can definitely be an in if the subject matter is right.

Some companies have specific advanced degree (non-MBA) recruitment so tell her to keep her eyes open for those. Highly recommend connecting with anyone you know who did an MBA and ask them for resources for case prep.

Thanks so much for the advise.

Also MBB will have sections of their recruitment website specific to non MBA grad (PhD, JD, MD). All three have life science focused projects and it might be helpful for her to investigate boutique consulting versus MBB life science consulting.

I personally did the transition from BioMed PhD to consulting. Happy to answer more questions in DM if helpful!

Clearview has two practice cases on their site that are very much in line with what to expect from a LS firm case interview. I would start there to understand the general scope of the type of case she’ll see.

like

Trinity also has a practice case. These 3 examples should give a good sense of what to expect

like

As someone who went from PhD directly to consulting, id also recommend that she do as many informational interviews with consultants as possible. It’s equally important to understand if she would be 1) interested 2) a good fit 3) able to find opportunities to fill any skill gaps (e.g. communication, PowerPoint etc)

like

What kind of resources, specifically? Places to find good work? Case examples and structure? Behavioral interview contents?

Case examples. What to expect in an interview . How to craft your resume if you have a PhD for a consulting job.

Check out the various top university graduate consulting clubs (Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Tri-Institute in NYC, Johns Hopkins, etc.) for resources, that'll be a good starting point.

Also have her email the club contacts to join their listservs for more resources, case practice, and firm informationals etc.

I did not think of doing that . Thanks so much!

My SO has been a pot smoker for nearly 20 years. He's smoked nearly daily since he started in college, sometimes multiple times a day. I've always had issues with it, but since he was high functioning I didn't mind it too much until we recently had a child together. After baby was born, he continues to smoke multiple times a day and didn't have a problem with his family smoking in the house until I called him out and got into a huge fight.
