@CS1 I blurt out a lot of awkward things out of nervousness but it looks like I’m weird or dumb. I’m sorta left out of cliques and it translates to work. Things like that.
A good therapist can help you get to the root of where it’s stemming from. I’ve struggled my whole life. Through therapy and meds I’ve been able to feel like a normal human being again. No shame in asking for help, this is very common.
Could you explain how you feel it’s hurting your career? I’ve always suffered with pretty heavy social anxiety too
I can totally understand! When I first started it felt like everyone was in the same clique but as I got to know certain people I learned that they are just as awkward and totally understand my weirdness. I became a lot happier at work, and I felt more compelled to speak up to those I trusted. Agencies are political and being awkward is hard but find the other misfits, they’ll make you feel comfortable and less awkward.
Try taking a stand up comedy course - all about thinking on your feet, interacting with others, etc. Try seeing a therapist.
Try meditation.
It's hard. I relate.
Glad someone understands @acd1
Same! I just started with a psych to handle it, doing cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. There’s no shame in seeking help. It will improve your quality of life at work and beyond. Just take that first step. Also for me meditation has helped a lot. The anxiety is still there but I can separate my self from it a little more if I meditate for 20 min in the am
Same, and definitely feel like it has impacted my career. I was always told that hard work will always get you everywhere, but I’ve seen first hand that people who swing by offices and chat all day get more advancement than people who keep their heads down and work. It’s an unfortunate part of this business.
