If it’s in a regular brokerage they would eventually pay taxes on the gains, if it’s in a Roth IRA they will never pay tax on the gains

What’s to learn? Index funds have been proven to be the best bet time and again. But I like the idea of having him own it! Get a Betterment account or similar.

I think the big lesson is that index funds perform better than picking individual stocks. If he wants to pick individual stocks just for fun, go for it. But index fund is the way to go.

Our now 10 year old also decided he wanted to invest last year 😂 he and my husband researched stocks and narrowed it down to a few possibilities. He ended up choosing based on something he liked. We’ll see what it’s like when he turns 18. It wasn’t much, but same idea…a good learning experience for him!
