I think a lot of people (including myself) are interested in option one.
Given the environment, I think it is a more reasonable option than in the past. Client relationship building is my perceived hurdle, but i am thinking everyone is struggling with that right now regardless of physical location.
Contd:
1. Stay with current practice and work remotely? Likely would require frequent travel back to present location. Not sure this is even possible, but would like some input.
2. Look to join local office/practice where we woukd be relocating to. Thinking this would probably setback my promotion timeline, but again looking for opinions/input.
It’s generally only allowed if there isn’t a local office already. Unless the BUPICs change their attitude and firm changes, I think option 1 will likely be a no-go. Also, I doubt it from a networking perspective. At the end of the day, a MD & partner’s job is to network and win work. How do you accomplish that if in a different city without poaching from the local office?
Agree #2 will set back the timeline by at least a year, maybe more if you were positioned to take the place of a retiring. The office & business unit leader will need to get a feel for you in order to nominate and won’t want to piss off their people.
Agree with above. #1 is the most likely. However, I would caution the work remotely piece as mentalities might take time to adjust. Some firms were pushing to reopen pretty quickly. I have a feeling a lot of old school partners will be pressing people to be local. Also, as you move into that role, you’ll need to be more “present” (despite the current situation) to not only guide and mentor your teams, but also be a member of your local community.
