It absolutely is worth it!! Because if students dont learn to write cursive this generation will not be able to read cursive such as old documents, the constitution and anything else that has been written in cursive from the past. Also, why not teach students how to read an analog clock?? Knowledge is power. There are still analog clocks in the world, why handicap them by not teaching it?
I know teachers that cannot read an analog clock nor write or read in cursive. I teach and encourage cursive in the classroom.
My seniors in high school complain that they did not learn cursive because now they need to use it sign checks and papers for work and they do not know how to. They say it makes them feel less adult. Teach it
That’s sad
I teach sped and have taught the analog. Just the basics so if someone says be at work half past 2 they know 2:30 and no matter the type of clock they know. Also they still need to know how to sign their name in cursive. I teach them their signature
When cursive and analog clocks are on the God Almighty Texas STAAR Test, then it will be important again. Right now, everything is about the STAAR test. Not practical knowledge and skills. Sad!
Absolutely yes
Clock yes! Cursive? Meh.
An analog clock, yes. Cursive, not at all. Why? I'm 42 and I don't know a single person that writes in cursive. Writing yes, cursive, no.
@New Jersey HS 8,
While I understand your sentiments, when I am asked to sign a legal doc online, it is most often typed text and not cursive. (Perhaps it tracks my computer ID ). Signature is taking on new forms.
These are skills that students are supposed to learn in elementary school. If the students didn't get it then, that's sad but oh well. There are math skills you need to focus on as a middle school teacher that math skills in higher level math classes will build on. If you spend your time teaching students how to read an analog clock or write cursive you are taking time away from teaching the skills they should be getting at your grade level.
It should not take that long to go over them and then have students practice on their own or as extra pts.
I do not think it is necessary to learn to write in cursive. My daughter is in 2nd grade and it’s mandatory they write everything in cursive. She writes very nicely in cursive but I wouldn’t say it has made her any more successful.
I do think reading an analog log would be beneficial. While almost every person has a phone with a digital time on it, I do think this skill would come in handy.
Is cursive taught in 3rd grade? Then reinforced throughout grade school?
My daughter is learning in second also. Since this year is also virtual it's hard for her teachers to really help her learn, but I found a book at the dollar tree that allows her to practice each letter.
Although a lot of people don't use cursive there are a lot of people who do. I have encountered high school students who could not read cursive. Pair that with a college professor that write in cursive (I had several myself) and now you have a major problem. I think they need to at least learn the alphabet and have a signature.
As far as analog clocks go, I cannot count the number of places I go where only analog clocks are used. This is a very important skill that also teaches and reinforces many other skills. It also allows kids to learn time lingo such as quarter to or quarter after for example. They are both valid skills and, if time allows, could give you a chance to have some fun with the kids as they embark on a new adventure.
Analog clock, is a must have there are still to many of them in this world and most house clocks are analog.
Cursive, it gives them different modes of expression. Some kids hind it more appealing , so they should not be deprived of that option.
Wait.Wait....Your students can write? With a pencil or pen? Mine can only text.
Yes, the analog clock and there are times when they will need to sign their name during their lifetime. Best to learn it now.
Depends on what you mean by worth it. Have I used cursive and the ability to read analog gauges (clocks included) to great effect in my previous career. Pretty much essential in that field, actually. I suppose I could have learned it when I needed it, but I was taught it in school and could focus on other things when I got to work. So, it was worth it to me.
But we don't have time to teach everything, do we? We don't have time to teach arithmetic and algebra in the school I'm at now. We don't have time to teach effective writing either. If you have the time and resources, it's worth it. I honestly struggle to identify anything not worth teaching/learning if you have the time and resources. Most of us need to prioritize, though, don't we.
Actually, we have always had time. I’ve taught for over 35 years way before 1 hour for PE and breaks for this and that. I taught every subject including History/Geography which is hardly taught anymore and writing as well as cursive writing. It is how one uses the time.
I was never taught to ride a horse, which was once considered an essential skill. It's uncomfortable living thru changing times.
Horses are used here as physical therapy to our physically, and emotionally disabled students.
Allow them to learn on there own, teach the clock and make the write answers in cursive.
Yes
Clock yes, if only because it'll stop them from asking you what time it is when there's a clock on the wall in your classroom.
These are skills they should know just in case. So I think it is well worth it
It is absolutely worth teaching both!!! Please take the time to teach both. At some point students will have to read old documents and write their name on an official document. They should be able to read and write cursive. All students need to know how to read an analog clock. How many times do directions call for something to move or be turned "CLOCK WISE"? If they ever travel abroad they will need to know how to read the clocks in the locations they are in. Reading an analog clock is also a good way to introduce fractions in math class.
If nothing else, learning to read an analog clock is great practice for counting by 5s and the 5 times table.
