My team culture is aweful but I like the work itself, a lot. I want to apply for essentially the same job and role at a competitor firm. How do I respond to 'why do you want to switch?'

I would more or less say what you posted here, just more politically. “I love public accounting and really love the challenge of the work and the engagements that I am on, I am just looking for a different culture where I can see myself growing and learning from my colleagues.” Are you going to the same size firm? Would help if you’re going to a bigger or smaller firm where you can bull shit too and speak to better resources / engagements / growth opportunities (big firm), or better work life balance / close knit culture etc (smaller firm)

You’re at a point in your career where you’re eager to learn and grow and you have concerns that staff development is not a (maybe understandably) priority given the dynamics of the team. Be honest but diplomatic. You’re talking to humans, don’t BS

Just to clarify, I meant don’t BS about why you’re leaving. Everything else is fair game

Thank you all, looking forward to the interview :)

Be honest, but don't say anything negative. You don't want to bad-mouth your current employer. Tell them what you hope to get out of the new firm, not the things you didn't get from your old firm.

A more acceptable form of what you said. I switched and when I was asked why I explained the industry and culture wasn’t a good fit for me

Why don't you ask to change teams with your firm if it is just your team? Seems like an easier fix than jumping firms.

How do you explain to you SO the role of billable hours? I have an offer at Google and trying to decide if I take it! It’s a level lower than where I am now and would take about two years to get to the next level. Right now I’m at KPMG as a manager and am pretty much guaranteed Director in October if I stay. TC if I stay and make Director is more than if I leave for Google. Trying to weigh the opportunity….what do I do??

How would you go about telling a company you don’t want to do anymore interviews? I was originally told probably two or three, then “one last one”, and now “potentially two more”. In each interview, they talk like I have the role and keep asking how much notice I would need to give as if they’re in a rush to get me in, but then schedule another round of interviews. Honestly the interviews seem more like meet and greets. Cont.
