My upper back has been killing me for weeks. I've been getting massages which hasn't helped much, and I'm terrified of going to a chiropractor. Any other ideas?

Well, chiropractors are bullshit anyway so don't. Ask a proper doctor. If it's your upper back it's probably got something to do with your posture and you might need to get a more supportive chair in the office.

Physical therapy, NOT a chiropractor. A doc is likely to just refer your to a PT anyway so if you have a PPO just skip that step

@Analyst1, or workout and focus on your core

Had lower back pains and was totally out of shape. Went w gf to a bunch of hot yoga classes and my back pains disappeared completely. Sometimes all you need is proper stretching exercises.

Go to a good physical therapist. A lot of back pain is pain transfer where the problem originates somewhere else completely. And massages are completely useless to deal with that. I had this experience and PT did wonders. First you need to figure out what is wrong and the PT can help with that. The rest of the suggestions here may or may not help depending on what the problem really is and the PT can advise.

Read "Healing Back Pain" and/or any other book by Dr. John Sarno. Has healed thousands. Including me.

Foam roller. You're welcome. Also, I used to think chiro = witch doctor, then had a freak accident where I was desperate so I succumbed. It was great. Just have to be selective. Also, shocked to see only 1 other person recommended yoga, do that.

Hot yoga and regular stretching at the gym cured my nagging upper back / shoulder pain in a few weeks

Stress usually does that to me. Figure out what you're stressed about and either remove it or figure out a way to calm yourself down. Usually gets better once that stressed is removed.

I swear by my chiropractor. Had lower back pain and I would say that he saved my life. Please go see one. I guarantee you will be healed
