What kind of senior partner says that. Someone told me that, I’d start looking at other firms stat.

I hope you and your wife have a speedy recovery! I also hope you take some sick days to recover and look for a new job. You don't deserve to work with anyone who demeans you like that. Some people resort to belittling their employees to get them to work harder but you'll be a lot more productive working under someone who doesn't treat you that way.

like

They’re making you work and you have COVID???? I can’t get past that.

You can’t get the work done if you’re dead. Part of being a good worker is learning how to set boundaries. Looks like you believe being available and working all the time makes you valuable, and it probably does, but unless you work in big law, find a firm that knows you’re a human and sometimes humans get sick.

like

Put your physical and mental health first. Take time to recover without feeling guilty. Every single comment in this thread indicates the same opinion. Don’t hesitate to look for a new job as soon as things improve. I would never work for someone like that. There isn’t enough money or prestige in the world.

It sounds like the partner was joking, but you know their personality better than any of us. If you can't read him, then assume it was a joke and just take your PTO. He will face the facts and deal. As others said, this disease is leaving a massacre in its tracks, he can never hold this against you and if he does, he will fail.

like

Doesn't sound to me like the partner was joking, but I suppose OP should try to determine that before making any decisions.

In time. I have not taken a vacation since starting at this firm 2 years ago. His comment has motivated me to continue to try to work through the sickness. But I feel that it is at the expense of the client because sometimes I cannot think straight. Am I wrong to think that at this time I should focus on rest and recovery. Or should I continue to try and prove the senior partner wrong. Not that he would notice any difference if the work got done now v later as it is not time sensitive.

like

Here’s how I would handle it: I would call the partner to discuss verbally, and ask “were you being serious when you suggested that you think I’m trying to get out of doing work? I wasn’t sure if maybe you were joking.” People hate being asked things like that but if your tone is even, he’ll know he has no right to get defensive and will either 1. Be shamed into apologizing for a “misunderstanding” or 2. Stick by his guns and tell you he doesn’t understand why you can’t work more. If it’s #2, I think I would just apologize and explain that, while I’m not a doctor, my understanding is the reason the virus is very severe for some people is because the impact on a person’s lung tissue makes it difficult for their body to take in and spread enough oxygen through the rest of the body, it’s like being at really high altitude for an extended period of time. So you might feel fine in the morning but at a certain point your body gives out because some systems aren’t getting enough oxygen. (There are a few episodes of The Daily in which the NYT interviewed physicians at heavy-hit hospitals in New York and New Orleans that describe what it’s like watching patients languish because they have no energy as a result of COVID’s impact on their respiratory systems.) I think a lot of people who haven’t had it think it’s just like the flu and don’t understand it includes flu-like symptoms but presents a little differently, and that the differences are why it’s such a terrible virus. If he still doesn’t get it, he doesn’t get it, but at least you’ll have tried to say your piece. Either way I’d then follow up with a polite email thanking him for his time talking to you and expressing your regret that COVID is making you so tired. That way, if he is a big enough jerk to want to raise a formal issue with your performance at some point down the road, you have the record of having explained to him that this is not about the sniffles. And when all is said and done, he will probably look like he was being an ass.

This is insane. So insane that so many of us are wondering if the partner was joking. If he wasn’t he’s an asshole (unless you take an inordinate about of sick days on a regular basis which I’m assuming you don’t since you said you haven’t taken a vacation in 2 years). Take all the sick time you’re entitled to and use the hours you feel good to start looking for another job. And rest. People have taken unexpected bad turns with COVID and you have to minimize the chances of that happening by taking care of yourself and your wife now.

Been getting a ton of recruiter outreach messages lately, and a lot of them are attractive roles that I would never even be on a shortlist for. I'm a mid-range analyst at best. Back in office and want to lose the covid weight (not much, but I am petite so just feel uncomfortable with the added pounds). Mentioned it to colleagues. Colleague who is in good shape (male) told me a few days ago he could do a program for me, and found a gym close to where we both live for us to go to, Is it weird to go with him? I probably shouldn’t think this but somewhere in my head I am thinking.... do I want to be in gym gear around this guy? Haha

Currently working at Accenture as a C (promoted Dec ‘19), but I know I ultimately want to make the jump over to Deloitte. I am on track to be promoted to M in the 2021 promo cycle and I know Deloitte would likely knock me down one level either way. Due to COVID-19, it seems like it doesn’t make sense to jump ship for at least another year while things get back to normal. Any thoughts on if it’s better to wait it out and leave after making M (but how long after?) or try to leave earlier? TIA
