My wife and I are considering relocating to a new city. I’ve been working with a recruiter who (I thought) gave me a good lay of the land. Which firms to meet with re lateral opportunities, which to avoid, etc. I’ve since spoken with a friend who has connections at other firms that could be a better fit. Do I bring in my recruiter or reach out through connections? Is using a recruiter beneficial to me, or am I better off on my own? How does their fee play in to what I could get as a package?

Would reach out to contacts first since firms generally prefer to pay their own associates a cheaper referral bonus than incur a referral fee. And if it’s a publicly available listing, then the recruiter is of less use unless you’re super slammed and unable to do the logistics of applying and similar.

For context though, what new city, what practice group, where are you lateraling from and what seniority level are you at?

SF to Charlotte, so big move. Transactional/M&A. 3rd year.

Gotcha. Charlotte’s going to be focused a lot on banking for the market or closer-to-market paying firms out there so keep that in mind. A recruiter might make sense to explain your case since it’s a big move and you’re less likely to have contacts there.

Alternatively, a lot of the Bay Area tech firms are permitting folks to work remotely from certain areas of the country and Goodwin SV/SF is one of them (and drowning in corporate work, so there’s a need). Charlotte is one of their clearly delineated cities and only requirement is that you be barred in both CA (which I imagine you already are) and NC (which I imagine you were going to do anyways). The firm also has a travel budget for you to visit your “home” office once every 1-2 months. Feel free to DM me and happy to provide more details and discuss.

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!

Is a daily 1.5 hour commute (total) worth a more supportive work environment and better benefits?
Thinking of jumping ship after just 6 months in a fully remote position for an in-house, in person job where expectation is 5d/week in person. Commute would be around 90minutes/day in interstate. Better salary, good 401k match, parental leave (20 weeks paid), 4wks PTO, and a very big name for the resume. 3 YOE. But I love the flexibility of remote work, so struggling to decide.
