My wife and I moved to a new city so we could be closer to her family because we’re having a baby. We’ve been here for a few months now and I haven’t made any friends. I’m glad you’re not depressed but I’m a little concerned you’re heading there. Stop that before it starts! I know there are limited opportunities right now, but you can still get out there: look for a hobby class (woodworking, beer brewing, underwater basket weaving, whatever), join a recreational sports league, go to a gym, look for somewhere to volunteer. Make conversations with strangers every time you go out… even if they don’t turn into friendships, it’ll feed that part of your brain that needs connection. Call old friends, too.

The use of the word city might’ve been a bit cavalier, but we’re in the suburbs right outside of a city I guess

Have you thought about hobby groups? My wife and I moved to a place where we had no support system and it’s been difficult. That’s been something that I’ve leaned on since

I feel that. I lived to a new state to take a job, and with the whole remote thing I haven't even really seen the friends I made during my SA program. I agree that depressed is the wrong word. I usually describe it as a restless type of loneliness. Things will get better. WFH will end and you'll develop relationships with your coworkers.

Yeah, it’s tough. You’ll find that once the baby starts going to school, your wife will make friends with other moms and then you’ll make friends with their husbands. They most likely won’t be as close as the friends you have from high school and college but they’ll make for good company. I’m fortunate in that I met one friend that way who has become pretty close. Congrats on the pregnancy btw.

Outside of grad school, really haven’t made any male friends as an adult. Try sports leagues, networking events - it’s tough out there. Is the move temporary?

I have benefitted so much from WFH. I’ve had more time to cook, exercise, and get more sleep. The dread of returning to the office is getting to me and I hope we don’t have to return to the office again soon.
