Is the firm MBB? Is the PM position at a FAANG (amazon). If she wants to work at a start up and prefers PM over strategy, the natural answer seems to be take the PM role. Is money the only con? Ignore the money. Don’t base the career decision on that. Get foot in the door post MBA doing what you want and later on, she can switch to PM role that’s higher paying

PM. Strategy at startups (and tech in general) are mostly support roles. It’s much better to be working on core product and development.

This times a 100. Also, post mba level at google is l4 but she could come in a year later at l5. I’d personally take the pm gig.

Consulting opens way more doors than PM, particularly if your goal is as vague as “executive role in a start up.” There are so many other factors here I hope she puts a bit more thought into her plan. Does she want to work in tech? What kind of startup? What kind of strategy? What kind of product?

What’s her prior experience in? If she already has consulting / big names on her resume, I’d say it makes sense to just start at a startup post MBA. Start ups really value hands on experience and in my experience consulting only goes so far with them after a “foundational” level. It’s still great to have but if that’s the path she goes down I say do max 2 years in consulting then pivot to a startup. PM experience is really good to have too - startups glorify PMs (rightfully so) and they have a ton of power over the overall business strategy. At my old startups the strategy folks were basically support staff for the PMs like someone mentioned above

Doesn’t sound like she knows what she wants to do—would suggest consulting for future optionality though it will hurt PM chances down the line vs. going to product now. But flexibility is key if you’re really not sure. Good experience especially if pre-mba experience was more non-traditional. PM I would take if I knew I really wanted PM (not slight preference vs. strategy—should be highly preferred). Also need to consider type of company—if it’s a tech tech company (ibm, msft, etc) then would consider…less so if it’s PM in non-tech world (MasterCard, Home Depot, etc) as that’s much less valued by tech companies for future exits.

Thanks BCG5, this was very helpful!

Maybe she should apply to start-ups…and learn the ropes of being apart of a start-up. Can’t lead what you don’t know

PM skill set is worth way more in this economy IMO, especially considering her long term goals. Of course, depends on the specifics of her situation (what firms? Location? Specific practice areas? Etc…)

Don’t post MBA PMs at FAANG make way more than MBB when considering the RSUs?

Sorry, meant OP probably doesn’t have offers from FAANG and MBB

Hello! I have a two part question: 1) is it worth it to obtain an SHRM specialty credential if I don’t have the broader SHRM certification? 2) has anyone gotten the People Analytics or Talent Acquistion credential? Does it make sense to make a lateral move from a Big 4 Advisory position as a Manager to a small (less than 100 person) boutique management consulting firm? Compensation and title are both the same but WLB will be much better at smaller firm (talked with current and former employees) and opportunities to advance in the company could be great as they are looking to grow rapidly. Base compensation overall is $170K in a T3 city. Recruiter wants to set up an interview.

Experienced hire Manager here, informed before Christmas that I’ll be taking another lap but not because of performance (5/5 on scats and all operating at next level) or metrics (22mm in MR) but the only reason is I need more time in the “saddle”… During this time, I’ve been replying to recruiters and after a PPMD interview last week, I was offered an SM role at a smaller firm with a base pay increase of 45% (225k) over my current salary.
