My wife is asked to take unpaid time off for an indefinite amount of time vs. being officially furloughed. Is this disadvantageous to her since she can’t get unemployment benefits?

I’m not an employment attorney but I’d recommend you consult one. Based on my limited knowledge in some states this is not permitted.

Good idea, I’ll do so!

I believe most states will let you file, no matter how the company defines the reduction in pay. In many cases you can also file for forced reduced hours even if you are still working.

Can she say no? If not, this is a furlough regardless of how they spin it.

like

Depends on a few things - 1) do you all need the money immediately; 2) is there a risk that she could still be furloughed even if taking unpaid time off? If so, then yes probably disadvantageous - is she on your health insurance already?

But she will stoop getting healthcare this way

She can still get unemployment. It doesn’t have to be a furlough.

26M making $155k base and about $185k TC at a large payments firm (Visa, MC, AmEx). I’m also 1 year away from promo which will probably get me to $210-220k TC. Do you think I still need an MBA? A lot of senior leaders in my team have 1 so I’m really not sure at this point. The opportunity costs are high, but I’m well aware of the long term benefits. I’ve also already taken the GMAT and gotten a 740. I’m an Asian male and find the hurdles that we go through for admissions a turn off as well.

Hello, I am 36 and have over 250k in savings. I started saving late (at 32) as I didn’t make much and lived in NYC. I used to be on a visa and had little to say on my salary negotiations. Upon getting my green card, my salary doubled when I changed jobs and I started saving extensively. Today I make around 180k a year and am able to save $4.5k a month and 7% towards 401k. I have no kids and I am looking to maximize savings. Any advice? Thanks!

How do you negotiate vacation time? For example, if I have a trip already cleared that’s about 9-10 days off in the next 2 months at my firm but go in-house (final round upcoming with me and another candidate meaning it’s at least 50/50), I don’t really want to start and then lose say 10 of 15 allotted vacation days right away. Anyway to negotiate those as exempted? Apologies if a stupid question, pretty new to this process
