My wife is planning a family vacation to a remote place with no cell service and very limited WiFi. I will need occasional access to email. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? What did you do?

Longtime V25 associate and partner. My wife did this deliberately in 2002. I planned, informed people and took the plunge. For 3 weeks. And when I re-emerged 3 weeks later the world was still spinning. It was sort of disappointing to discover that I was nonessential, but since then I’ve taken multi week trips every year during which I completely disconnect. Good for your brain. The moral of the story is that you need to delegate or let whomever delegate. You don’t “need” email access and will be better off without it.

I appreciate the point, but 2002 vs 2019 makes me think going totally off grid for 3 weeks would not be looked kindly upon — even for a rainmaker senior partner. That’s just a reality of living in this day and age. That said, TELL PEOPLE you’re going on vacation with almost no internet. Tell people REPEATEDLY and make it clear your expectation is no email.

like

YOUR WIFE IS DOING THIS FOR A REASON. So, go with it, communicate your vacation and inability to access emails well ahead of time, continue communicating it, and leave behind another associate as an emergency contact.

Thanks! This is a great app!

Dude, this is the perfect excuse to not have to work. Let it happen. Also, check with your IT guy.

Thanks for the feedback thus far. Great advice. I’ll start preparing ahead of time for the week of true R&R.

Exactly the right answer. Enjoy the time off.

Absolutely!

Satellite data hotspot?

Agree with all of this advice. As long as you inform, communicate, and prepare, limited connectivity should not be an issue. The firm was there before you and it will be there after you. Enjoy the time away.

How can I set the stage this year to negotiate a lower billable hours expectation instead of a raise? As a woman I'm hesitant to be open about my reason: I want more time at home with my kids. I lateraled to this firm a year ago for WLB and they are indeed flexible on WFH which helps. Salary is a bit below average for mid-size firms like mine in my area, and I didn't get a raise or bonus this year because I didn't hit the billable target (1900). Ideally I'd keep my salary but go to 1600 hours.

My fiancé’s family has a vacation planned at the end of June in Florida (small beach town about 45 mins from PCB). We’d be flying from California if we decide to attend. I want to go for sanity reasons, but feel like it seems foolish too. What would y’all do? Just wait and see?
